Hi all. As per thread title, I'm looking for a small hatchback for the boy's 1st car, budget £4-5,000. All the usual considerations re. insurance apply! I'm struggling to find anything that really floats my boat, everything so far looks a bit leggy and a bit tired.

Can anyone find anything that looks like it might fit the bill? Happy to travel for the right car but we're in Suffolk.

Many thanks!

Apprentice at work has just picked up a 2015 Ibiza for 4500. Looks good and cheap to insure, has bluetooth for music and a few other nice bits.

Do what my lad did, buy a £600 55 plate 1.6 Focus, insurance surprisingly good, drives nicely and when he prangs it (which he will) you won't give a sh*t. Better yet make him buy and pay for his own.

That’s not a terrible idea....

My 17yr old son bought a three year old fairly basic Picanto for £4000 twelve years ago from a Kia dealer, as new on 35,000 miles.

He has just scrapped it last week on 150,000 miles, no trouble other than routine brake shoes, exhaust, battery etc. He even got £150 scrap for it.

Cheap motoring.

£4-5k? For a first car? Get a grip man! He's going to bend it and have all the insurance woes that go with a claim. Unless of course you can afford to throw away the money.

My lad has just got this...

2007, 1.2, 74k, new MOT,Grande Punto. Insurance Gp4 spotless inside, needs a new heater resistor, sun visor clip, rear parcel shelf clips all sourced new on ebay for less than £20 total and he paid (admittedly with some help) £1200.

Got my son a Mk6 Fiesta Zetec Climate 1.25. 2008 with 70k miles and full history. It's a cracking little car and I love driving it when he's not, comes with a
heated front screen too which melts the frost in about 10 seconds flat, alloys, AC and lecky windows. Appears not to use any fuel and will sit comfortably at 80mph on the motorway.

Almost identical to this: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202011075...

Insurance will be the key factor personally I'd spend less it's his first car spend then you'll have more to put towards his second.

So for around half of your max budget you can get these & then you should be able to insure & buy a car for 5k:

Don’t buy your son a DS3 DStyle, sounds too much like doggy style.

I normally agree with you but can’t on this. No young man wants to drive anything French. Even the Alfa is a girls car! I’ll accept the Swift though smile

Without quoting all the choices again - you don't need to do that, ok? - the Alfa is definitely not a girls car. A driver's car perhaps.

Anyway, there is absolutely no way any child of mine would have a car at £4-5k as a first car. Especially if there was no input financially from them. Just makes a spoiled entitled little idiot.

Have to disagree a bloke will not look out of place in any of them colour choice is the key on some cars but all work across the board.

But on the other hand, nobody cares what you think about that. Stick to the brief and offer some suggestions?

And the Alfa IS a girl’s car.
