Avoid Nissan Gashquai / Joke?

A friend (m, 30) wants a mumsy soft roader with an automatic gearbox for some reason. I have tried to steer him, but...

He is sending me links for Qashquai and Juke CVTs, Honda CR-Vs and a Jeep Patriot.

I seem to recall the Qashquai is actually not a good car despite its popularity. Is that true, and what about the Juke?

I assume it is worth avoiding horrid CVT gearboxes?

I know nothing at all about the Jeep but I assume it’s not great

I suppose that of these, the CR-V is the best car?

Honda CRV every time, but the HRV is more the same size as the Cashcow, as my mate calls his. He's on Motability and can't wait to get rid of it.

Other alternative that are god, sturdy, well built and reliable are the Skoda Kodiak and Karoq. The Kodiak is similar size to the CRV, Karoq is same size as HRV and equivalent of the VW T-ROC and Seat Ateca

We went from a qashqai to a 2.5T Kuga with the Kuga being better in every way except fuel consumption but that's to be expected. You can get them with a proper auto and 4wd.

SWMBO was looking at Kumquots when we were looking for a replacement car recently.

I wanted an Octavia VRS estate...

Ended up with an S Max 2.0 EcoBoost 240.

Nissian thing was just meh... Nothing overly appealing about it and massively underpowered engines. Can get far better for the money.

Had a new Qashqai 1.5dci Tekna as a temporary company car for 9 months in 2018, worse car I’ve ever had but my wife loved it and wants one to replace her car

Had issues with noise, ride but that was probably the rubbish wheels optioned and a leaky windscreen.

Tell him to get a Kuga preferably in Titanium X spec. Or he could go for a petrol X3/Infiniti EX or Q3 depending on how much he wants to spend.

Qashqai now doesn't use a CVT in the auto, although the one we had that did drove unlike a CVT as it had electronic shifts built in to make it feel like a normal auto. Actually had no issues with the car, and whilst not the most involving and certainly not exciting, as a family car it was fine.

Latest has DCT gearbox, and again this one has been good, no issues, drives OK for its intended purpose, quiet, smooth, and aside from now not having a local Nissan dealer for servicing (closed down), I see no reason why we shouldn't get another.

My brother had a Juke as a courtesy car about a year ago. I can't remember much about the specifics, but as a passenger I really didn't like it. I seem to remember it having a crashy ride, and it was generally uncomfortable, noisy, and felt a bit 'cheap'. I was disappointed, as I'd always thought they looked quite cute.

Jeep renegade was a decent if every dull car, I had a brand new one in 2016, few year old ones are a bargain.
I had the 1.6d, performance was acceptable and never dropped below 45 mpg even when driven hard

I don't think there would be any major issues with the Qashqai provided your friend goes with one of the tried and tested engine options like the 1.5 diesel. 1.2s are supposed to be riddled with issues. Think the smaller normal alloy wheels are the best, brother in law has one with the big diamond cut jobbies and they all warped with the speed bumps on the estate they live and a new set cost £1,000!

I vowed to never have a car so depressing, but it actually looks like one of the better contenders for my next purchase, as I need a high ground clearance (have to park on a grass verge opposite the house we're moving to In a very rural area and current astra bottoms out/gets stuck), and very good fuel economy.

The 1.5 Qashqai I had as a courtesy car from enterprise when some idiot crashed in to my Golf got a brim to brim calculated 61 mpg, which is pretty impressive for such a big lump. I spent half the time thrashing it as well.

We've just bought a 17 plate cashcow from a known supermarket.

was something like 12k, with all the toys, automatic, cruise, dab, sat nav.

We had a Gashqai and now have an Xtrail and although they do the job as suggested above they are not the most exciting things in the world.
As a family hack they are perfectly fine but I’d look toward the Ford suggestions if I were looking again.

For me this format of car works very well but I would be looking at the Skoda or Seat interpretations of the theme. The Ateca is very cheap on a lease at the moment. Probably cheaper than cash or nearly new.
