Something to save me hiring a Van!

We're about to complete on the purchase of our first house. The house is going to need a couple of rooms stripped out so anticipate a good few trips to the tip and the compulsory Ikea trip to kit the place out.

Luckily I sold my 275 trophy just before lockdown and got top-dollar for it, so I'm currently car-less and this will be my only vehicle until something comes up for sale that interests me again, probably just a Fiesta ST3.

I just really want something that will save me a few hundred quid and negate the need to hire a Van or 2 during the move and stripping out.

Budget not so much of an issue because the car fund is separate from the house, just want something cheap, reliable and be able to flip it near the same money without waiting months for a sale. I only drive 2 miles to work and I assume it'll only be a couple of days a week from now on anyway.

Been looking at Volvo V50's, but really outside my knowledge base of what to look out for and if these are even the best option for reliability and saleability

Any suggestions?

How big do you want?

Vectra estate
Mondeo estate
non-Aero 9-5 estate (non-Aero = valueless)
V70
Accord Estate.

If it is just a mobile tip run car then any unfashionable, old estate with the squarest body and longest MOT.

A V50 isn't really that big to be honest.

I'd be going a class bigger as suggested above or even dare I say it Kia MPV where you can pull all the rear seats out and suddenly you have a vans worth of space.

Buy something cheap with a long MOT

Volvo, Mondeo, Vectra, Passat, whatever.

I'd probably go for a Passat personally.

When you're done with it, re-MOT it no matter how much ticket is left.

You then shouldn't lose too much ££

Or buy something van based. Citroen Berlingo or similar.

Galaxy sharan or Alhambra mk1 or mk2....rear seats out its like a midi van and a flat loading area.

I would just hire a Luton tail lift for the move. If you have all the usual stuff to move from a house then you won't fit some of it in a car anyway and the stuff left will take dozens of car loads to shift.

Get an MPV and take the seats out. Renault Grand Espace is hard to beat for space.

As above or hire a man with a Luton Van (more hands to help with the move, in reality getting some removal men in will save a lot of headaches.

I'm going to go a bit left field here. How about a Toyota Landcruiser. They are bullet proof and should be easy to sell on, even if they are a little trashed in the back.

Should be plenty of space as well with all the seats down.

Check the rules for your local tip though. Ours class pickups as commercial so you need to pre-book and can only go a certain number of times a month.

If you're really doing a lot of work get an old transit.

Much better than any car based alternatives.

Pickups are cool but no security unless you put a lid on it and then negate the advantage of a pick up.

I went with a Mk3 Mondeo diesel (2.2) that cost £700 2 years ago, I've just upgrade to a 508 estate but the Mondeo has a better boot area. I just need to move it on .
