Small Cheap Car £1000

My brother has just passed his test and is looking to purchase a small car for around £1000. Any help would be great.

There's a load to choose from, personal preference I think.

Personally I'd prefer a Getz or Picanto to a 107.

I bought one for £1k as a disposable stop gap 3 years ago, would have been happy to get 12 months out of it... 3 years later it's been faultless and sailed through each mot.

His budget should include the insurance cost too.
You might find spending more money on the car will bring the insurance cost down.

I would populate a spreadsheet with a list of actual cars from Autotrader c.£1200 with actual insurance quotes from somewhere like compare the market.

Depending on how many miles he will do MPG could be factored in too.

E.g. if he keeps the £1000 car for 2 years and the insurance is £1200 per year and it does 30 miles per gallon and 8000 miles per year.
It will cost a total of £1000 + £1200 + £1200 + £1450 + £1450 = £6300

If he buys a car for £1500, with insurance that is £1000 per year and does 40 MPG
It will cost a total of £1500 + £1000 + £1000 + £1200 + £1200 = £5900


I found the Kia Picanto, Suzuki Alto and Toyota Yaris to be cheapest on insurance. But I don't like the C1/108/Aygo so didn't consider them.

You could also try to calculate residual values, so after 2 years if the £1000 car would be worth £640 and the £1500 would be worth £960, you could add in £360 / £540 costs into the calculations.

Thanks for suggesting this. Rather than getting real quotes, is there a way of estimating what the insurance would be by inputting age + insurance group into some kind of calculator?

Once you've done one quote on one of the comparison sites it's easy to then revise the quote so you only have to put the reg in of the next car. Will be much more accurate this way.
