3 or 4 yr old XC90 or Discovery

Giving up our old 2013 XC90 for an upgrade, fancied a new one and tempted to look at Petrol or Hybrid with concerns over future treatment of diesels, but get a lot more for your money/newer going for diesel. If diesel, the new shape Discovery is an option in the same ballpark and seems attractive, but would like some PH views.

We need size, we live rurally on a farm and we need to be able to tow a horsebox, hence the options we are considering. Would be interested in views on the future of diesels too. Thanks in advance...

As long as it's euro6 a diesel will be fine out of those two it would be the Discovery everytime mainly because the 3.0d is less stressed than the 2.0d in the Volvo.

Both are reliable & come nicely equipped take a look in both & see which you prefer I'm assuming you're looking to spend around 35k?

It would be the Volvo for me mainly because IMO the Disco looks gopping

Volvo’s weak link is in only having 4 pot engines.

The Disco is one giant weak link and worry.

If you don’t need the 7 seats of the Disco a FFRR might be another option?.
I quite like the Disco 5 and the XC90, I think out of those two I’d probably pick the Volvo because I’d be concerned having the 3 litre V6 from Land Rover.

I've had a Disco5 in the past and have just ordered another. Fabulous family car and - correctly specc'd - handsome. Much nicer to drive than the Volvo IMO and nicer inside too (although some prefer the Volvo, I find it a bit asinine and naff). I moved to a FFRR but Mrs Ettore prefers the Disco', so back we go!

I'd keep your 2013 XC90 unless its done intergalactic miles or source another low mileage one.

I’ve test driven both the SDV6 and B5 mild hybrid diesel. Preferred the Volvo and engine-wise the B5 seemed perfectly capable and never felt stressed or underpowered. One caveat for me is air suspension. The conventionally sprung XC90’s ride is little harsh.

No, I generally like a handsome car and have had a fair few that traditionally fit under that banner. The Disco has absolutely grown on me and I think is actually quite distinctive (in a good way). It is extremely spec' sensitive though and requires the right colour and wheel combo'.

Thank you all, had to look up FFRR! As expected, the query divides opinion in some cases... FFRR probably a bit too posh for my wife, who will sometimes need to use for work, visiting clients homes as a community NHS health visiter, disco slightly concerning in the same respect!

What about generally the idea of a petrol or hybrid versus a diesel?

If she works for the NHS in particular she should not be going anywhere near a diesel (and neither should anyone else)

It'll be cost you more to run a petrol hybrid full size SUV than it will a diesel just in fuel (especially when towing the horsebox) costs alone & that's before servicing/maintenance costs.

You could always go for a Diesel Hybrid there are some good SUV options, but it will mean Main Dealer only when it comes to servicing whereas with a straight ICE engine you can use a specialist Indy:

Personally I'd be going for a 3.0d it's the most suited to your (especially when towing) needs, there are two others worth a look:

This from a man who has written a website about TVR’s with pictures of them being used in motorsport/drag racing etc

So you condone burning fossil fuels for fun yet criticise someone else for running a diesel.

It's certainly a view, but we live rurally, won't be anywhere near a city traffic jam, and perhaps the modern diesel engine, is nowhere near the death machine it's portrayed to be? Emissions lower than so may petrols too. The country can't go electric yet and certainly not where we live...
