What diesel for up to 5k

Looking to replace my BMW330 d 2005 as I just find it to small, need it for approx 15,000 miles a year, also got a RS6 but don’t want to do that sort of mileage in it.
My thoughts are
E320 sport
Audi A6 3.0tdi
BMW 530 or 535 ( must be LCI)
Any other suggestions

Octavia won't be big enough.

E320 would be OK. I assume we are talking w211 at that price? And e60?

I'd be going accord.

ETA: or Mondeo. If its just a mile muncher I wouldn't be doubling down on German estates.

I really wanted a 330d but now I have got it, I find it small and uncomfortable so am concerned about both mondeo and accord for size and comfort. Previous daily before the 330 was 2005A6 3.0tdi and before that had E39 540’s, but was only doing about 3,000 miles a year then so fuel didn’t worry me.

Both are as big, if not bigger than the equivalent e60 or w211.

Also, I think they are a better ride, unless you can find an unmolested w211, e.g. elegance, with decent life left in the suspension.

I wouldn't aim for something close to the rs6, which your options are, because you will just wish you were driving the rs6.

A Skoda Superb would easily do the job, is bigger than the OP current car, but badge snobbery won't permit that consideration. Or a Vectra/Passat/508/i40/Optima all of which are 'lesser' cars than the German stuff.

DS5 this would be my second choice to the Mondeo, imo they look good too. They have loads of space equipment a well proven drivetrain & under valued on the used market.

Like the Laguna the Citroen C5 is a good vfm option but for a more modern interior I'd opt for the DS5

It’s not about badge snobbery, I like my daily to have a bit of power and it’s seems only the Germans put the larger diesels in, want a car that is comfortable and reasonably quick, as I have a 270 mile round trip every weekend and don’t want to spend silly amount on fuel every week ( and don’t want to put stupid miles) on the RS6.

I do 1500 miles a week in my i40. Its got plenty of grunt thanks.

Of course it's badge snobbery. If you want comfort you won't beat a Peugeot. Or a Volvo. But then, if you really wanted comfort you wouldn’t be tooling about in a BMW 330d.

So why bother with a diesel? Your opening post said nothing about performance. Just alluded to size and something bigger than a 2005 330d.

Why didn't you just ask what large engined diesel BMW or Mercedes can I buy for £5k?

But putting that into the Autoloader search engine would have probably been too simple.

So far all you are doing is proving my point.

A 5k leggy w211 or e60 is not as good or sensible an option as a newer, more reliable, more comfortable car such as an accord (auto boxes noted) mondeo or 508 (which I think is a cracking shout.)

Picking a e320 w211 over these, or a 530d e60 is absolutely based on image. The only image it portrays, sadly, is person who buys a leggy estate cos of the badge.

If you’re definitely wanting a 6 cylinder diesel beyond the German options you’re limited.

2.7 or 3.0 diesel Jaguar XF or maybe an XJ might fit the bill. You could hunt down a 508 or C5 with a V6 diesel or maybe take the wafting option and of a C6.

The one thing I’d look at as well as an Eclass is a CLS.

Though if you want comfort and adequate pace a Volvo S80 D5 would be a great choice and way more comfortable than a 330.

Because you have dismissed out of hand two or more decent options without saying why until you confess that a 4 cylinder 170hp diesel just isn't enough. You deny badge snobbery but want a Mercedes or BMW with a big diesel engine (presumably because someone else is paying for your fuel) and only want to spend £5k. Nobody is criticising. You just dismissed all the suggestions because they weren't German.

Mercedes CLS seem better value than the equivalent E-class - first hand experience as I've just purchased one to replace a Range Rover.

Hi OP now you've been more specific about your requirements, an Auto comfort and a decent amount of are the priorities then yes the Germans have it covered but I will say everything listed will tick those boxes with a simple remap most of those will be 200-230bhp with 340lbft+

The thing is with your annual mileage getting a good sensible mileage one is going to be the hard part, I'd still consider the four pots but have in mind you'd need to remap them.

Just bought the RS6 so think if I spent more than 5k on a daily my wife would kill me, will remap whatever diesel I get, think the six pots will be a lot smoother than the 4 pots, the 330d is very quick but not comfortable and feels cramped, I like the thought of a 4 wheel drive audi from a safety point of view, an e320 merc for comfort and a BMW 535 for performance.
