Budget of £10k

15k miles per year, good portion of this is motorway.

Must be:
•ULEZ compliant / Euro 6 diesel
•Auto, comfortable, true 45mpg~, reliable*

Cars I had in mind:
BMW 520D M sport (F10 & B47)
Mercedes A220 CDI BlueEff AMG Line (W176)

Cars I’ve considered and discarded:
BMW 320D M sport (F30 & B47) - around the same price as a 5 series
Audi A4 (B8.5) - not a fan of the interior

Any other cars worth looking at?

  • I’m aware that both of the above cars suffer with chain issues. Hoping regular services (more regular than manufactures recommendation) & keeping an ear out for any noises will help prelong/catch it before it gets bad.

As long as the BMW is the BXX series of engines, I wouldn't touch the previous NXX four cylinders with a 19 mile barge pole.

15k miles is about break even on vs petrol on up front cost and then running and still just an annual service for most.

I wouldn’t rule petrol out, might give a bigger range to look at and they can meet many of the emissions rules without problematic filters.
