M135i/m140i and shed or just 335d x drive touring

Hi so I’ve been weighing up getting a new car for several months now. I tend to do around 15k a year mix of motorway, a, B roads.

At present I drive a shed diesel under 2k which is good for work and a car I don’t have any worry over.

My options are

1. Keep the shed for daily use and get something fun for the weekends/ occasional drive - ideally a m135i or m140i or potentially golf r.
2. Sell the shed and get down to 1 decent car I can use everyday and that tickes most boxes...fast, spacious, fairly economical, large enough for family

Although looking at a mx5, gt86 or motorbike for the toy. Would love the new gr yaris, but way out my price bracket!!

Option 1 but with something more exciting, a hot hatch isn't special enough for a weekend car imo. This is from experience too - Leon Cupra 300, great all rounder but not special as a second car so I got rid and now looking at something more interesting as my second car. It was great when I used it as a daily though.

The cars you've listed for option 1 will work for option 2.

They are daily drivers not weekend cars.

Id say go option 2 because I think it will annoy you having a 15-20k car sat there on your drive while you go about in a 2k diesel day to day.

I own a 240i and a Supercharged Mini Cooper S which is mainly a.track car but is road legal. I've been driving the Mini for the last week just for a change but after a week its started bugging me that I have a 240i just sat there while I drive around in a Mini thats probably worth £1500 on a good day.

As much fun as the Mini is its now gone back in the garage and ill be back driving the BMW daily.

Go for the bike for a couple of reasons you can get a very good for around 4-6k which'll leave a nice amount for your daily.

OP go for option 1 I've done this & not looked back.

buy something you can enjoy every day, life's too short.

I would keep the “shed” it’s nice having a car you aren’t precious about. Then I’d get a fun second car. Lotus/ caterham/ Porsche something a bit special

I have an M140i, it’s a great car but it’s not a weekend toy. It’s a quick, practical everyday car in my opinion/experience.

When I wasn’t using it much during the first lockdown, and only got to take the long way home from the supermarket once a week, it left a lot to be desired and I found myself getting bored and looking for something more. However, once I was allowed to use it for more mundane stuff I started to appreciate it an awful lot more.

As a one car solution, they’re pretty good. Quick, yet comfy for commuting and cheap enough to run.

I've been doing 21k a year in an M140i for the last 3 years, so here's my thoughts.

You can use one of them as easily as a 335d. When mine was standard it would easily get into 40mpg on the motorway if you go ZF8 auto. They're also bulletproof engines. Mines making almost 600bhp and it's never put a foot wrong. They're massively understressed stock.

It'll be a brilliant daily and great fun, but I'd echo above comments, it's not really a super "special" car. Mine's ballistic now, but it's still more of a sledgehammer than a precision tool if that makes sense.

So I guess it depends what you're after. The M140i is a phenomenal daily driver though, you won't be disappointed.
