Hi all,
I'm in a bit of a quandry at the moment. I have an M140i that I've had since new, it's 3 and a bit years old and is modified with a hybrid turbo etc, made 595bhp on the dyno last time it was on. It's been completely bulletproof in the time I've had it and I've done 65k miles in it. I bought it new to keep and specced it how I wanted for long term, so the car is well specced for a 1 series and is finance free. It's a fantastic daily driver and I still average late twenties, early 30's mpg wise.
My quandry is this. I must be getting old, but part of me is thinking that currently I've got about £20k ish sat in it, either putting it back to standard and selling or selling as is, give or take a few grand tops. My heads saying that if I continue to do the miles I'm doing (21k a year) then I'll have some decent maintenance bills in the next 3 years and it'll be worth sod all really. I bought it originally with this in mind, so that's not been an issue so far. I wanted something fun to drive as I do so many miles, I get decent fuel allowance with work that offsets my fuel costs and it's been great.
However I'm having thoughts of selling up and getting something like a Citroen C1 / diesel clio or even a derv mondeo or something for say a grand, and getting something a bit more special to keep tucked away for days off and that will hopefully hold it's value better.
Currently I'm considering an E60 M5. I think it's probably going to stay fairly steady in value terms if it's looked after, and I'm in a decent situation now where I've pretty much finished renovating my house and I could keep it garaged when not in use.
What's the general consensus? I'm not necessarily stuck on an E60 M5, but I think it would be special for nice days and should hold it's money OK if I look after it. I also know BMW's well, and have E61 M5 experience and know the S85 and it's foibles so I'm not going into it blindly.
If not that, what else for circa £18-20k that should hopefully be fairly steady value wise and be a bit nice as a toy?

So I've made some assumptions here, 21k per year, 29mpg and £1.15 a litre of fuel. That's £3700 a year in fuel. You must be absolutely loaded!I'm in a bit of a quandry at the moment. Anyway, my vote goes on a £3-4k daily and spend the rest on another special car

Not really, it’s mapped for 98RON super so fuel is more like £1.30 a litre, but as posted I get a really good fuel allowance from work so my personal mileage is probably a fraction of the 21kAnyway, my vote goes on a £3-4k daily and spend the rest on another special car
The 140 is silly cheap to maintain as well really, I’ve replaced all the discs and pads once in 65k and I’m getting around 18k to a set of Pilot Sport 4 tyres which are about £500 a set. Tax is only £145 a year so it’s been a really good cheap reliable car all things considered.
With that in mind that’s sort of why I’m looking at a cheap daily and the M5 as I couldn’t manage halving that fuel economy then the added cost of brakes and tyres etc for an M5
Plus it would destroy the value down the line and make switching pointless anyway

Use your M140 as your toy, anything you buy you'll end up fettling whatever else you buy. So I'd turn the M140 into the garage queen & get a smart daily that way you'll appreciate both for what they are.
The two car solution works for me & as I said above it helps me appreciate my toys & my daily.

The main reason I have a Fiesta for daily use and my P38 for when I want to enjoy driving!
I'd love the M5 Touring a proper practical v10 estate, which will appreciate, nowt sounds like a V10 and while you're on the V10s consider the M6 you can get a 2005-2007'ish M6 for good money, quite cheap for what they are..
My only gripe would be the SMG!
Mind you a C63 AMG would be nice too!
Oh and maybe an L322 5.0 S/C!
