New year..New Car...VW Golf

Hi all , hope everyone is well

In the market for a new car in the new year and I've shortlisted to two potential cars

I do on average 15k-20k a year. I'm a little stuck,

Fully loaded 7.5 Golf GTD or for the same money a standard 7.5 Golf GTI . I understand the GTI is probably more fun to drive and even as a basic spec they are pretty well kitted out. Both are manual.

The GTD has pretty much every option, heated leather, upgraded stereo, pro nav, sunroof etc. The GTI is basic spec but still has the heated cloth seats, virtual dash etc..

Which one is likely to hold its value more and which would you go for? From my understanding the GTI's are pretty good on fuel too?

The simple answer is neither will hold their money well when you're adding those kind of miles, if you want a VAG to do those kind of miles with take a look at the Leon you'll get the same car for less & in petrol form you'll get a high spec Cupra.

Thanks for the reply, in terms of holding their value this is not a deal breaker. I'm pretty set on either a golf of a focus STD. Leons although look very nice don't seem to do anything for me unfortunately.

No problem the Focus is a peach & would be my pick out of it & the Golf.

I used to have a 7.5 GTD DSG and now have a 7.5 GTi Manual. The GTD averaged about 45mpg over the two years and 24k miles that I had it - mainly A/B road stuff. My commute is 13 miles each way on A/B roads. The GTi is averaging high 30's mpg, but low 40's is easy to achieve if you're careful. I'm impressed with the GTI engine - very torquey and smooth. Out of the two, i'd go for the GTi.

With that kind of use, neither will "hold value" well - the UK is utterly obsessed with low mileage.

Personally, I'd try a DSG-equipped car for the job - the ability to set the cruise control and have the car manage itself from walking pace to motorway speeds is just excellent, very relaxing if you have a traffic-clogged commute in your life.

Look very closely at spec, a car with the better stereo, adaptive suspension, all-round parking sensors, reversing camera, etc., is a much nicer place to be than a "standard" one. And not much more money to buy, especially when you think about how long you're going to be sat in it.

Ultimately, Diesel\Petrol is much more of a personal choice than it once was, the costs are a lot closer than they used to be.

I have a 2013 GTI mk7 manual I love it, really think it might be irreplaceable.

Brilliant car does everything and I have nursed it to 44mpg on a 150mile trip though avg would be around 35mpg all in.

My view on it is the GTI is comfortably the better car having driven both. Cloth seats with tartan look better than the leather I think personally as is the biggest decider for me. You get heated seats regardless so aren’t missing out really. Options you listed wouldn’t swing me if I’m honest.

GTI will always sell to a young lad wanting a well maintained hot hatch. Diesel seems to be getting a bad rep and issues around dpfs and buyers becoming more aware might limit the potential market in a few years.

A DSG GTD for your miles could swing it but if I’m honest especially with the cruise control.

I think the GTI will be a much nicer drive and a more relaxed steer.

Unless mpg is your defining factor, go petrol all day long....

When doing miles spec is the deciding factor in what I buy so out of the Golfs it would be the GTD actually it would be the Focus in ST-3 spec.
