Coming out of a Golf R estate to....?

Hi, I've been lurking for ages having leased a Mk7 and then Mk7.5 Golf R estates. The lease deal threads back in 2016 and 2018 were very helpful!

Current car is due back in May and I am really confused about what to go for next. I am torn between a big family wagon or sticking with the estate option.

I drive probably 9,000 miles in a normal year, usually short trips (20/25 miles) typically lug a couple of bikes around. Couple of family holidays further afield with all the usual stuff to cart around too, so space would be useful. Having had the performance of the R for the past 5 years I'm in two minds whether to get something with a bit of poke or not. I'm bored of the VW now though and fancy a change.

Budget is £20/25k - current thinking is:

- lease/finance a new XC90 - not sure if diesel or petrol better to go for with my mileage. What appeals is having a bit of luxury inside to barge around in and never having to worry about space. No decent lease deals around but I can swallow the costs I have seen.

- buy a used 340i estate - I had a 55 plate 320d (!) which was a great car at the time and so not averse to going back to beemers

- buy a used 5 series estate - not sure if they are too big as a daily

- buy used 3 series saloon and just use towbar and roof box for holidays.

- lease new BMWs but they seem even more spenny than the XC90 so prob more than I'd want to spend.

- Never had an Audi but the A6 avants look ok and I think you can find reasonable lease deals.

Previously i thought something like a 330d would tick all the boxes but not sure if I'm doing enough miles and what a 17 or 18 plate would compare like inside to the mk7.5 golf.

Skoda Superb with the 2.0TSi 280PS engine and 4 wheel drive available with either the Sportline, SE L or L&K trim level. You can have a saloon or estate.

A bit of a sleeper and the estate has a huge boot.

I hadn't looked at those but I can see they'd be a good option ordinarily. I imagine they are going to be very similar to the Golf inside and tbh I'm looking for a bit of a change from the VW/Skoda/Seat interior.

Even the recently replaced F31 is a brilliant car especially with that engine and why would you not go for a big 6 when you have the chance? The old fashion mechanical handbrake feels like a bit of an anachronism but otherwise there is little to fault them. The only thing is do you need 340bhp - the 4 cyl 2.0 330i is also excellent but the 6 in the 340i is amazing.

I would always have to be a 6-cyclinder in a BMW for me. It's what they do best.

I went from a an R estate lease straight into a V90 D5 lease... not quite as exciting, but a bloody good barge with a semi bit of poke when needed... to be honest the Volvo was a better car for my usage, a lot of motorway, but not as fun

Thanks, nearly went for one of these last year instead of extending my current least for a year. But, how do you find the handling? I prob only do motorway miles once a month, at most. The rest of the time its A road stuff.

It was barge... felt very heavy and soft... it was an R design on 18’s... different to the Golf and probably more suited to my style.. freaked out when I first took it over a decent lump in the road, as the steering went light it went into panic mode, cut the throttle, snatched the seat belt tight and flashed warnings I was about to crash!! Straight road so not an issue.. quite clever but a definite way of ruining any excitement!

On a more serious note the 3 series touring or the Volvo v60 would be my choice, the v60 polestar design looks fantastic, actually stopped when driving past the Volvo dealer for a closer look

Ha! Maybe the R estates have a bit less of a reputation? I've enjoyed the two I've had but need a change. Good shout on the Polestar, looks very smart.

Creaks and rattles, slow gearbox, loads of electrical faults, slow navigation system. I’ve just feel it’s going to have a major failure sooner or later. It’s only 2 years old, I don’t really want it out of warranty!
