Petrol or diesel
Discussion
My daily commute is 20 miles each way - 40 miles round trip
Roads are mixture of country lanes - 30 mph speed limit and A roads - 60 mph. i'd say a 50:50 split.
with other trips I do 15,000 - 20,000 miles a year - most of the other trips are motorway trips.
so - would a petrol or diesel be better for this sort of trip. I am looking at an A3 150 bhp sort of power / car

I have only ever owned one diesel and have had numerous diesel hire cars on holiday.
The only one I half-liked was a Saxo 1.5, which had some personality.
Now, I would never buy a diesel. Terrible cars with no power band and a joyless experience to drive.
Nowadays, petrol cars are capable of very respectable mpg, my Mountune Fiesta ST215 would return 38mpg and was brilliant fun. It would doubtless do about 45mpg on a run, that was in an urban environment.

Is OP pointing towards mpg factor or power band or feeling of power band? The only one I half-liked was a Saxo 1.5, which had some personality.

It seems to be from mpg point of view. In that case, diesel would always win.

What kind of budget do you have? Roads are mixture of country lanes - 30 mph speed limit and A roads - 60 mph. i'd say a 50:50 split.

20,000 miles a year is a lot to put onto a car that’s older, and if you’re buying a diesel A3 it’s likely to be leggy if you’re looking at a low value one.
I’ve got a diesel for my 30 mile each way commute but there’s only a miles at either end of it in town so the car spends most of the time chugging at 60-80mph which suits a diesel. On the times I’ve needed to do lots of short trips in stop start traffic I’ve always found myself wishing I had a petrol car.
To be honest, this may be an apples and oranges situation but I’ll give my thoughts anyway.
I’ve got a C300d (240 bhp 380lbft) and while it was in for a service, I got a C200 petrol (190 bhp, not sure on torque), oh my god, I’ve never driven a car that felt as crap as that, it literally felt asthmatic in comparison, they’re 2 different models and my car would have naturally felt punchier as it was a higher model and diesel with more torque but the point boils down to what is better for a petrol head.
I’m a petrol head and I had the C200 for 48 hours and just couldn’t get on with it, despite it sounding nicer and quieter than the diesel, I just didn’t feel the connection, give me a diesel over a petrol every day of the week h less it’s a V6/I6

I think this is quite relevant - I love driving, I love revvy petrol engines, my daily car for 23k/yr for the past 8 yrs has been a 2009 330d. I'd take it as a daily over any average powered 2.0 lightly turbo'd petrol. It's not got a narrow power band at all, what it's got is a thunking whack of torque exactly where you want it for daily, normal, traffic filled driving.I’ve got a C300d (240 bhp 380lbft) and while it was in for a service, I got a C200 petrol (190 bhp, not sure on torque), oh my god, I’ve never driven a car that felt as crap as that, it literally felt asthmatic in comparison, they’re 2 different models and my car would have naturally felt punchier as it was a higher model and diesel with more torque but the point boils down to what is better for a petrol head.
