So here’s the conundrum, my missus needs a car but won’t drive a manual so I’ve got to sell my Mk2 Gti and get something automatic she’ll approve of but also I’ll love using on the weekends and will be a modern classic. What ideas do people have?!

Budget?
MPG a consideration?
Body type?

I am going to go in and say C63 AMG without knowing any of the above.

If hatchback sized, Clio RS200 / RS220 Trophy?

Ok, so yes I didn’t give enough info. £10-15k budget. I drive a GLC 63 so we have our AMG dose 😍 and it’s a little out of budget.

My wife bought a Clio RS200 as wanted something sporty and wanted an automatic. She loves it and has taken it on a track day and sprint. I've driven it quite a bit and I like it too. Automatic for when feeling lazy and paddles for a bit more involvement.

Failing that, a newer Golf with DSG box?

If you want a hatch that imo is already a modern classic then I'd say the MK5 R32 (they'll never make anything like this again) is the car for you:

Other options:

Big miles but these cars just keep going already a modern classic:

C55 prices have been solid for a good while:
