Hi All, With my lease on my M140i ending soon I am looking to buy my next car and was wondering what PH'ers can suggest.

I don't have many criteria's other than it being "quick", would like to scratch the V8 itch but would consider non V8 cars. Max budget £10k.

Would love a saloon E55 AMG but seems like not many on the market and not a fan of estates.

Current cars I am considering
XF 5.0 n/a or 4.2 SC
XK 4.2 SC
E39 540i
E46 330ci
Impreza WRX

If Manual gearbox then chuck in the Audi S4 saloon (B8) from circa 2008-2010. With those years you also get the lower tax band of just £320 per year as opposed to over £500 per year if you go for the later years.

For old-man autos wink

then the Jag XF offers good performance for the money.

You should be able to pick up an XFR for that kind of money. Believe me, it's a fantastic car.

I wouldn't be buying any of the Jags at that price point, as it's scraping the bottom of the barrel price wise. I recently sold my XK-R (4.2 X150) after 7 years of ownership and I wouldn't fancy buying any of them at £10k as I know how much people will pay for a good one and I know how bad a bad one can be these days.

I love E39s, but the 540i isn't a quick car in my book and as nice as it is, doesn't feel special in a performance-sense.

330Ci also isn't quick, but a nice Clubsport would be a nice car to buy now and cherish. A supercharger conversion would be nice also and you could have change to go towards that if you bought wisely.

I also recently sold a 358BHP Hawkeye WRX after 4 years of ownership and £10k could buy you a very nice, properly tuned example. You could maybe get a Blobeye STi Type UK within budget, but these can be neglected, ran on a budget and check for rust on these very carefully!

In my opinion, if I wanted something nice and quick for £10k, I would be looking towards a nice E92 335i. If you can get something nice around the £8k mark it leaves a little change for upgrades. This responds well to minor upgrades as they were "artificially" restricted from factory so as not to get too close to the M3 of the time.

S4 is a good shout, don't mind a manual but I am a lazy driver and enjoy autos.

Any experience with XF?

You could also consider the C55 as an option; only the normally-aspirated version of the 5.4L V8, but it's a bit smaller than an E, a bit more comparable in size to your M140i.

£10k, 82k miles. Do be careful buying these tho, rear subframe rust can be ££££ to fix. Japanese import so may be good condition.

Your kids and you are in for an interesting time if they're going to play you / you're going to pander to them like this in the post-divorce era.

Buy what you want or can afford. As others have said, your kids will get in it. And probably respect you more too, in the long run.

Just had a quick look at that VXR8 ad just now and the image of the dash looks like it says average speed MPH 192! laugh

I picked up a very light damaged Jaguar XKR 4.2 with 76k miles and it has cost me approx 8.5k now repaired and on the road again.

It had a nearly meticulous MOT history with one fail for headlight aim and came with a full Jaguar history too. The extent of the damage was a bent rear track rod end and some paint work to the very bottom of the rear quarter panel and rear bumper.

I had a couple of little electrical niggly jobs to sort out but the cars are that sort of age now where there's plenty of owner's information on various forums to fix them.

Plans now are some upgrades to the exhaust and tyres and with a bit of luck if I can find a jaguar aerodynamic body kit for it.

Family member still has his XF, been a good car for him and his family. They found practicality, performance and reliability all good for what they use it for, which is an everyday car and also for holidays. As long as they don't take it to a Jaguar dealership for servicing then maintenance costs are not that bad.

Back in 2013 I was looking for something around the £10k mark and I ended up in a E90 330i. There are so many tempting options there for sure.

This is great and an insane bargain and probably the only way to buy a worthy XK-R within this budget. I bought mine as a damaged Cat D for £13,000 in 2013 and sold it last year for £14,000. I spent more than £1000 repairing it as I really went to town on it, but for almost 7 years of enjoyment it was very cheap motoring for such a car. I only averaged around 1000 miles per year in it or thereabouts and it had just over 60k on the clock when I sold it.

It was pristine and a multiple show-winning car, but I was still surprised how quickly and easily it sold as I knew I was asking strong money on paper for a Cat D car, but it was genuinely the best XK-R out there for that price, plus a lot of people liked the black detailing I added to give it a more aggressive look (I'm sure others didn't, but I know it would give it extra appeal to some people) and had people contacting me on the off chance it was for sale for weeks and weeks after it sold.

Amazing cars in my opinion. Think some people just dismiss them as a GT Cruiser, but the light weight for the size makes these so capable of doing everything and always such a thrill to drive. Amazing suspension and gearbox. It's an auto that really know what its doing.

Interesting, simple to maintain, not a bad price (cash available to fix etc) and can probably be upgraded without ruining... surely this is the one.

I've always found these intriguing, they aren't going to win any prizes compared to the others in traditional Top Trump categories, but I bet they rate high in the fun score.

thats a great colour in them!

The only thing i dislike is the wooden dashboard so ive been toying with the idea of getting it wrapped as well as the chrome bits on the wings and rear boot panel. Did you get those resprayed or wrapped?
