vw golf mk 5 tdi v mk 6 tdi
Discussion
Hi all, I am currently on the look out in getting one of these motors for my work horse commute. My budget £3-5k can get a reasonably decent low mileage (under 60k miles) 1.9L Match model mk 5. However I have noticed some slightly higher mileage mk 6 1.6 TDI. The bhp seems to be the same (103), however the annual road tax for the latter is a lot cheaper (£30) in comparison the mk 5 £150.
Is the fuel economy roughly the same? I am wondering whether it is worth getting a lower mileage mk 5 or a slightly higher mileage mk 6 and pay a little more..
Any suggestions please?
Thank you.

Get the 1.9 it's the batter engine but you can get a nice 2.0tdi for that & in mutch nicer GT (you'll appreciate the better seats if you're doing miles) spec too.

Thanks for the options. To be honest I would prefer the golf over the Astra.
Given my budget I think a mk 5 would be a good all rounder. I guess if I go for a 138bhp diesel engine over the 168bhp (or thereabouts) the economy of the mpg would suffer a little? That said I might be moving house and if so, then I would be doing 120 mile journey 3-4 times weekly. Having that extra poke on the motorway might lean me towards the higher bhp diesel engine. I am sure you can get over 400 miles to a full tank, costing around £60 at the pumps.
