Looking for a fun daily €12k to spend

I'm from Ireland, motor tax is a lot more expensive for us and cars in general are just cost more.
Insurance is usually alright, so long as it's not high powered and rear wheel drive.
I've €12k to spend, part of that is a car loan - it's very cheap to pay back it's from a Credit Union - It's the way it is, I won't be buying something for less money in cash, the repayments just need to be factored in.
I'm looking for a fun reliable daily that I can commute to work and Uni in.
I just want something engaging to drive, I rarely use my booth, my passenger seat fits my bag and coat, so long as it's 'reasonable' in terms of running costs I'll consider it.
I've had my share of Mx-5s I want something different.
I want something petrol, even though I can/do commute 25 miles a day (some times 7 days a week) between work and uni.
At the minute I'm working from home (parents house) on work placement, and I've kept up my part time job so - I'm make a lot of money and I've no real costs.
Small or big I don't care, I'm guessing I'd have more fun in a smaller car.
My commute is B roads, some twisty, some straight and a very short motorway stretch going to Uni.
So I'm leaning towards a hot/warm hatch of some sort.
Fiesta ST - MK6, That's really peaked my interest, they're reasonable to insure, in budget (2013 100k miles), and tax is only €280 a year, which is cheap for Ireland.
My parents think the Fiesta would be too small, I don't care for/need a big car, but just in terms of comfort, they think it'll be uncomfortable.
Golf GTI - MK6, That's the only GTI in budget, my current car is a standard MK5 so I wouldn't get another MK5, slightly more expensive to run and tax than the ST, but probably more comfortable on my commute 2011, 100k miles.
Megane RS250 Cup - 2010, Recaro seats, remap to 275 (Top Remapper, very well done), KW Clubsport Coilovers, Team Dynamic wheels (and the original wheels), really well looked after, it's been owned by a number of guys who I know of through car forums/groups.
Top of my budget at €12k, and they are €1250 to tax which just hurts to even think about.
This is absolutely top of my list but I think I'll struggle to afford to keep it on the road, it's €1400 to insure (which is cheaper than the others), but with tax that's €50 a week or so before even putting petrol in it.
If I could, I would..
My parents think I'm mental.
Other than that I don't really know.
There's a 07 197 for €8k, €750 to tax, I heard they can have gear box issues though.
Fiat 500 Abarth, not seriously considering but they're cool.
Any ideas?

Wow some crazy prices for cars and tax and insurance there.
Pretty poor parenting in my opinion when they're prepared to let you live at home with no ''real costs'' whilst you intend to spaff away all your earnings + debt on a potential car that you don't appear to be able to afford to buy or run.

I'd wait until all this lockdown is over and hop on a ferry to buy one over here if I were you.

That’s sadly not an option as the government has introduced a number of charges to deter people from importing cars, especially from the UK.
Even with cars being so cheap in England it’s no longer that much cheaper to import a car.

I contribute, but the don’t want money from me I’ve offered.
I buy groceries when I can and I help out/fix a lot of things around the house for them but any time I mention money they say no.
They’d prefer if I got a base model Golf, Focus or comparable car that’s be cheap to run.
But I want something fun/engaging to drive, they’re fine with that, I’m an adult I’m capable of making my own decisions.
So I’m looking for something fun to drive that I can afford to run.
I think the Megane is out of the question, that’ll probably just burn a hole in my pocket..

Astra GTC VXR has been mentioned a few times on here as a good value alternative to the RS Megane. I haven’t driven one but reviews seem to suggest they’re not that far behind the Renault to drive but prices are much cheaper perhaps because it’s a Vauxhall. Wouldn’t bother me.
Other than that you may be able to find a middle ground between bog standard hatch and full blown hot version.

OP if you're prepared to come over to the UK then I'd say look for a 308 GTI, it's a 1.6 so you have a more sensible tax number:

DS3 Performance this is the same car as the PS 208 GTI (for me it's the best/most aggressive looking of the three) but a much rarer sight & only a smidge behind the Fiesta ST3 but with a nicer interior, the 208 has the best interior of the three

If you don't mind a warm hatch then there are some good picks all will be good steers but not to the same level as a hot hatch::
