Mercedes E500 Estate

I’m looking to buy an estate as I’ve been let down my work with a van and have decided to just buy my own car. I’ve been thinking and estate would be best. I’ve seen a rather nice 04 plate E500 Estate. The owner has a lot of history and said that the car has been well maintained and no expense spared.

I’ve thought I would ask on here if I need to be aware of any issues or problems that may occur.

There's nothing major to worry about on the E500 they're pretty much bulletproof.

It will consume fuel at a fairly ferocious pace. But you knew that.

It sure will but I’m just thinking that I only do around 4K a year so the diesel would be pointless and the smaller petrols are about the same to tax. Plus I’ve never owned a V8.

I suppose my main concern would be the air suspension and mainly the clutch and gearbox. I assume consumables are pretty standard?

They don't have clutches they're torque converter auto's make sure the fluids & filter has been done every 40k if it hasn't been done budget £250 to do so.

The legs aren't overly expensive these days & they're pretty robust, the 16 plug change isn't cheap but not the worst.

I will make sure to ask the seller about the fluids and filters. How much would the spark plug change be?

If you are ok with a spanner you can do the spark plugs yourself, its not a hard job, just a bit time consuming cus there are so many.

But not that hard to get to. Just removal of airbox, coil packs and then the plugs themselves.

A service A for the e500 is £420 at my local MB dealer. But doesn't include PLUGS. They charge £90 for an air filter change. Plugs are POA.

Whereas independent offers a spark plug change for £250 in my local area.

That’s not too bad. I would probably give it a go. Would anyone be able to do me a list of what to check with the seller please?

MOT History check (this'll give you some pointers as to where to look for any potential issues that may need sorting soon
Service History & receipts
When test driving make sure there's a noticeable difference when pulling away from a standstill between Comfort & Sport.
Then just make sure everything works & judge the car on it's condition

Thanks for that. I’ve got the Reg plate from the seller. I won’t post it on here. They said that it’s had the brake pads replaced all round two years ago and it’s had the ball joints recently replaced and the water pump.

Receipts Receipts Receipts otherwise it didn't (also check that the garage exists) get done.

That’s a very good point. I think having lots of receipts is better than having a stamped book. The seller says that the car is an 04 plate with 94k and two owners. For just under £4000.

I think I will. Just not sure what they want £8k for that car. A friend suggested a E320 CDI but I’ve said I don’t do the mileage.

Is there any other petrol price engines to consider? I’m still set on an E500. Just out of curiosity to see what else there is.
