Private car sales during lockdown...

As is my wont I was perusing the classifieds and noticed a lot of private car sales. Couldn't help wondering how they manage this.

I've got no issues leaving my area to collect a car - but a test-drive would, I would imagine, pose a little bit more of a problem. As a seller I'd not be too happy about letting a stranger take my car off for a spin...

Only difference for the seller is that they may be sitting in the back of the car (like minicabs which are currently running), when you look at the vans go by there's usually three people side by side with no masks and that's allowed so having a test drive should be fine as well.

I sold a car last year. Bloke turned up, viewed the car and bought it. To suggest that the Govt can or should dictate how you interact with other human beings is rather odd to me. If a buyer wants to wear a mask, let them (do suggest they stop watching BBC news perhaps but that is another question), I mean people push into me in supermarkets etc FFS and somehow that is all fine. Just be two humans looking to strike a deal over property, the way we have done for thousands of years.

I've sold several cars this past year, all have been conducted in the usual manner. No masks, both sat in the front for the test drive, handshake once deal agreed etc. No big deal.

Its fine to walk round th the supermarket without a mask on too.

Morrisons last night, a huge sign outside that says "NO MASK NO ENTRY" ith a security guard stood there.

10 minutes later I see two lads pushing a trolley round without masks on, clearly not medically unfit, just taking the piss. They were even from a minority ethnic group, which to my knowledge, have a higher chance of suffering serious covid complications.

My completely valid medical exemption is not visible.

Amazing how the current situation has turned people against one another simply because they dont have a useless piece of cloth hanging over their face.

How do you gauge how 'medically fit' someone is just by looking at them in a supermarket?

The signs outside the shops usually also have some small print below main message stating 'unless exempt' etc.

Would you ever expect to have a test drive on a private sale? I never have.

Do you really think the sort of people who want to sell and buy cars privately during this pandemic are going to be concerned about following a few rules?

I sold a car in May last year. What "sort of people" am I then?

I'd be interested if you could point out which rule (by which I mean - in the actual legislation, not the guidance) forbids the buying and selling of cars? There are many many reasons that buying or selling a car is "reasonable" even in a pandemic.

I suspect you buy cars from dealers then. Many private sellers would not allow you a test drive.

+1 - was about to say exactly the same.

The thing about not going anywhere without a mask full stop simply highlights how subjective the mask wearing is. If the supermarket rule changed tomorrow, I'd be shopping without a mask (on the rare occasion I visit one)

I have developed a terrible anxiety relating to masks since I was in hospital last year. I was in with horrendous breathing issues and what did they do? Slap a mask on me.

I cant wear them at the moment without feeling like I'm suffocating.

No problem allowing potential buyers to test drive any car I sell privately. On the basis that they can produce valid fully comprehensive insurance proof specifically for my car. This can usually be organised with a short term insurer over the phone or online in about 10 mins.

Always accompanied though.

I too would never buy a car without test driving and have arranged the insurance to do so on the odd occasion I have bought privately. No big deal.

I didn't mean that all people who sell stuff or cars are inherently bad scummy people who don't care. I meant they are less likely to be concerned if some drives there car without a mask, or with someone sitting next to them. The people who are scared to death of the virus are not going to offering their cars for sale right now.

Not all masks are equal. Most staff and patients in NHS hospitals are supplied with ordinary surgical masks which are far less effective than the more expensive N95 masks. It's not just about masks either. Ventilation is a key factor too, in terms of indoor locations. and is rarely discussed.

I find a pocket full of cash and the correct insurance almost always means you’re wrong
