Evening Guys,

Newbie to the forum from Glasgow, having a bit of a debate inside my head.

I had a pretty bad accident on my road legal Raptor 700 four and a half years ago and at the time I had a B7 4.2V8 S4 Avant and had to sell it due to it being a manual. I promised myself a C7 RS6 when I was fit and well again.

Now, I’ve been in the market for a C7 for a few months but it has to be the right car, with the right spec and for the right price. I have my eye on a Misano Red one on 27k with most of the boxes ticked.

RS6 link:

BUT, I’m now in a bit of a dilemma, where I’ve convinced myself that now’s a good time to buy my first (and probably last) supercar, and with the R8 V10+ prices seemingly plateaued at £80-90k and running/servicing costs being ‘reasonable’, do I just bite the bullet and go for the R8?

Now, I’d more than likely be buying the RS6 cash and have a budget of £60k for the right car. Is it worth financing the other £25k and going for the R8, just for a box ticking exercise? You know what they say, you only live once.

R8 would probably stay for a year or so and drop into a late C7 (67/18) RS6. But I think if I don’t do it now, I probably never will.

I’m a massive petrolhead, as most of you probably are. My last few cars have varied from DBP Mk5 R32 > Tornado Red Mk4 R32 > B7 4.2 V8 S4 Avant > Mk5 GT Sport DSG Golf (after my accident) > Mk7 GTI Clubsport > E70 X5 40d MSport. Loads of RS Clio’s over the years that I’ve ragged around Knockhill. I’ll post pics of them when I have more time.

Look forward to reading your replies.

Gaz.

I had a Huracan for a week once (alongside my RS6).

Much as I enjoyed the Lambo initially, it took about 3 days before it became obsolete.

The car became too inconvenient to use and when I did use it, the utility was pretty limited - so I concluded I was glad I didn’t own one.

That said, I did spend all day in it the first day and it was great!

R8 all day long for me smile. So many more layers to an r8 then a rs6

It will be an expensive exercise for just a year though, 15k possibly, potentially more. If you’re okay with the financial side go for it, you are never going to look back an regret having a supercar in your life. Plus one of the best sounding cars on sale at the moment and the v10 will be seen as one of the great ICE in the future.

Practicality shouldn’t be an issue as I’ll be keeping the X5 as my daily workhorse. There’s only myself, my wife and 15 year old boy, and we’ve very very rarely in the car at the same time as he’s too cool to be seen with his old man, even though I’m a young 38 PMSL.

One thing I’ll need to double check, is the dimensions. I’m ok with a fat A6 sitting in the driveway full time but the R8 would need to be tucked away in the garage.

I bought myself my 50th birthday present last year with a wide budget which could uncomfortably stretch me to a 997.2 turbo PKD or C4s, R8 V10 cab, both pre owned which is my preference. 3/4/5BMW Ms all looking at outright purchases. Couple of others I toyed with but never the Audi RS6, fancieda 4 years ago but not now. In the end I bought a well within budget Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, couple of great value tweeks give it 600bhp and I have never regretted it.

As that unique breed of PHer who has image on the list of priorities, about number 5, filling up next to a slightly older gent in his R8 and complimenting each others cars, for me I knew I'd made the right choice and that's driving aside. I'll stay with if not humble junior supercars (OK not for 4 months of the year but I want to manage performance not point and squirt, all very much imo obviously). That said for your choices I'd go with the R8.

I have an Rs6 c7 performance which is a great car and I can’t think of anything to replace it just now.

But given you have another daily car I’d go R8 if you can stomach the cost over a year. Have driven the v10+ on a track and the engine is something else. Had a v10 M5 before, so do have a soft spot for a v10.

If you have a practical daily and don’t need the practicality of a big estate, I can’t see why an RS6 would even be considered.

So R8 for me.

Well actually a cayman 4.0 for me smile

Actually re-reading my post I haven’t expressed myself properly.

My post reads like I was referring to the size / practicality differences between an estate and a two seat sports car - which are self-evident.

What I actually meant was different (but not what I wrote!)

Obviously if I needed more carrying space / seats then the Lambo was instantly redundant; what I wanted to say (but didn’t) was that the combination of lack of time and the disinclination to fold myself into the smaller car for short trips - plus the hassle of parking spaces, road jumps etc. Just meant that eventually I didn’t my bother.

Maybe I’m lazy, maybe I live in a crowded urban environment etc etc. but the bottom line (for me) was that aside from the proverbial Sunday morning drive or long range business trip (I did one) it was just a bit too much hassle.

As an aside, although the first run through a city centre was a bit ego boosting as folk were admiring the car - I quickly became very self conscious as well.

A further surprise was the sheer number of women who would give you coquettish looks whilst with their partner (not to mention the legions of women who were alone / with friends who would stare with their tongue out). If I wasn’t a family man my views on the practicality of the car would change significantly!

R8 for me.

I think that it just special compared to the rs6 (or any other rs). Amazing engine. Gorgeous noise. Lovely design. It would be so much more of an event every time you use it.

Granted they are two very different cars with very different purpose.

But for me, whilst the rs6 is a cracking, fast, lovely car. Its still just a big estate with a big engine and there are a fair few of those around. In addition, the rs6 will live on for a while yet in one form or another.

Where as i think the R8 and cars like that are things that are fast becoming obsolete. I'd rather have the change to experience one while they are in the realms of affordability (relative).

All that said. You could buy an R8, enjoy it for a summer and then sell it and have the rs6 and i'm sure you'd enjoy it no matter what you choose.

Which will do donuts better in a campsite at Le Mans 2022?

I’d get the R8 mate. Properly special car!

This was my old 16 plate rs6 performance. It was quick, seriously quick, even 4 up with full luggage. However, it was also heavy and for me gave me ridiculous lower back/hip ache. It was also stolen to order with scum breaking in at 3am solely for the keys. For that reason id never have another.
It depends what you want, the rs6 is a very quick practical estate but tbh, that's it.
The r8 will feel special and can be used every day as long as you don't mind less practicality. I now own a merc AMG GTS and love it. Aside from the odd occasion I miss the space I have zero regrets. Does the pootling thing well but is a fun, lithe sports car at the click of finger unlike the 6.

I just bought a 2017 R8 V10 Plus in October - do it, they are amazing. It was a massive step up from sports cars that I had previously. It was also (to me) completely in a different league to other cars that I had driven or been passenger in like RS6 and M5 which were still valuable but just don't have the special appeal.

Even compared to the Huracan and other exotic things that a friend takes home from work now and then, I think its just as special a car, especially in Vegas Yellow.

Financially, there's going to be a bit of dealer margin to pay, but I don't think it will cost you £15k in a year. Maybe allow £5-7k margin but I think depreciation wise they wont really drop much in price anytime soon. If it helps I paid £82k for a 7k mile car with a decent spec with 2 years warranty from Audi. Id hope it never really drops below £70k over the next few years if the miles are kept low.

If it wasn't for lockdown I'm not far away in Edinburgh and could have given you a demo.

The two angles the matter the most, to show the girth.

The RS6 lasted all of 4 months lol. Collect my R8 V10+ on Wednesday. Wish i bought one instead of the RS6, as they've gone up £10k since (tbf, most cars have).
