Car buying/selling
Discussion
Hi All,
Needing help on a couple of fronts here:
My current shed which has served me well for over 10 years needs a new gearbox and clutch..the gear lever gets stuck so it's not even safe to drive. It's a MK1 focus with MOT, what's the best way to sell this hassle free? I will declare the issues upfront but should I use auto trader or is this a Facebook marketplace job... or scrap even?
I need a new car asap and have a few in mind but struggling to decide..must be petrol due to low miles and 5 door to future-proof for practicality. Auto preferred but I've only ever driven manual so for the right car could be persuaded ( 90% of driving is in/across London)
Budget £10-12k
Heart says: Volvo V40 T3 or a Leon 1.4 ecotsi
Head says : Mazda 3 or Civic....insert any other plain but reliable hatchback here
Not keen on another focus, Astra/1 series/A class are also not on my list. Only concern with the V40 is small boot and potential big bills in the future given its complexity.
If I am buying cash via a main dealer, apart from service history and HPI checks, anything else I need to be looking at? I will be buying remotely too.
Thanks all!

We were in a similar situation, ended up with the mazda 3. Good reliability, and good looks. Drives very well too nice weight to all the controls and a lovely gearbox.
I wish they did the 165 bhp version in auto! The Sport Nav with leather and Bose stereo looks nice. Apart from some grumbles Ive seen about paintwork and corroded alloys these seem v reliable. Is rear visibility an issue at all?
I tend not to use Autotrader because their listing fees are so high but if you list it for under £1k, I believe it's free, but you only get 1 week for that. There are fees using ebay (£15 to list plus final fees) so isn't usually worth is on very cheap cars but if you list it starting at scrap value and no reserve, it may sell.
If you want to just scrap it, check out the internet for cartakeback or motorwise or all the various sites (there are plenty) for a best price. Some will collect for a higher price than you delivering it, bizarrely!

I've avoid the civic as an auto as they're CVT which ruins the fairly sport setup of the drive.
dispose of your car, well try px against whatever you buy, motorway.co.uk or scrap it, selling it to anybody privately will just leave you open to chancers.

Tagging along as I have exactly the same conundrum. Even the same cars!
I have 12 year old MK1 focus, engine light flashing on an off, something to do with cam belt even though it was recently changed. Also brakes stick every morning and more often than not leave a skid mark on the road... is 750 quid optimistic?
Looking at a v40 or v60, prefer automatic but can't find many about.
No question really just following for info and supplying some details just in case.

Cheers for the input guys.
So my focus is on 79k, v low miles as I've probably averaged only few k per year over a 10 year period. Full service history too with paperwork but I'm guessing that with the gearbox and clutch needing to be changed the paperwork won't count for much now! The comment above about chancers and other dodgy pond life coming to view the car is valid..there is a lot of that down my way so I'd rather avoid to be honest. Ballpark figure what would the scrap value get me..£200...£300 optimistic? I assume no main dealer would take the p/X given its basically undriveable? Well it drives but when the gear level gets stuck on a busy roundabout.....
As for next car I'm really not sure...V40 has decent shove in T3 variant but not the most practical.
Civic and Mazda 3 would be the safe options but not so great on performance and I suspect the Civic n/a 1.8 with CVT will be painful with hardly any torque?
Leon/Golf with DSG....avoid like the plague or is the known issue overblown?
Edit: I've seen a couple of V40/V40 Cc's for sale at Volvo main dealers and non-Volvo main dealers. Would there be any worthwhile advantage using a Volvo main dealer e.g: year warranty etc?
Also how much haggle room do I have with main dealers? I don't think the V40 is as popular as the Leon 1.4 ecotsi so maybe the V40 would give me a bit more wriggle room but no idea..I might start calling around to enquire

I'd just scrap the Focus. Good ones aren't worth a whole lot so I can't see why anybody's going to buy one with a knackered gearbox for much more than scrap value anyway. Any difference is going to be such a small proportion of what you're spending on the new car that it's neither here nor there; save yourself the bother of dealing with muppets and scrap it.

Is rear visibility an issue at all?
You could get the 120bhp auto and have it remapped to 165bhp, they are exactly the same engine wise, the ecu just cuts the throttle at over 4000rpm in the 120bhp model. Is rear visibility an issue at all?
Rear visibility isn't the best, but having previously had a 2015 civic I would say the mazda is better, luckily they come with parking sensors so the mrs finds it fine.
The wheel paint lifting is pretty standard fare for most Japanese cars I've owned. Other than that I can't think of anything that annoys me about it.
Ok I think il try the companies mentioned above for scrapping the focus, seems less headache
Car finance - this topic tends to split the forum but I'm debating between a loan +cash or just using cash to buy outright. Bank interest rates are crap as we all know and loans means interest will be incurred and no guarantee of the rate..lowest I've seen is 3.3% but that's headline rate so doubt everyone gets it....what have others done in the same boat?

the chancers was much after sales "i want my money back, x has broken" as time waters looking to buy.
To come back to options, given this is a utility vehicleyou aim to keep I'd actually be looking at something with a 5 year warranty or better warranty and cheap parts availability. Your budget should cover a 3 year old Kia Ceed (7 years/100k) / Hyundai i30 (5 years / unlimited).
As an oddball, take a look at a lightly used Dacia Duster, 11k will get you a manual 2019 year old car with low miles in comfort trim, throw some of the change at extending the warranty https://www.dacia.co.uk/warranty-and-assistance/wa...

I quite like the Duster but the footprint is a bit too big in terms of parking.
I was considering KIA/Hyundai but then not sure how the interiors/general comfort would be Vs the Volvo or others.
Golf ACT values seem quite firm..I guess less of them about Vs the 125bhp model and higher demand.

Aftermarket warranties are shaky...prices vary as do the excuses not to honour them.
I’ve had 1 years ago, and had to pay to replace a broken vnt turbo after I “overrevved” the turbo.
The Dacia ones are an extension of the full manufacturer warranty and prices are on that link.
I’d rather take my chances then pay for an aftermarket warranty on anything. My civic is now 7 years old, the only thing that has failed was the battery last week.

This is in line with what I've heard from others too where dealers may try to wriggle out of the warranty coverage based on spurious reasons (not saying they all do it).I’ve had 1 years ago, and had to pay to replace a broken vnt turbo after I “overrevved” the turbo.

I wouldnt feel the need for a warranty on a Jap or Korean car....on anything else not so sure. I guess whatever I end up with, will need to find a good indie anyway for servicing.
