Car help for weekend trips etc

Evening all.

Looking for some help usual scenario so will keep it brief.

Im looking to buy something for me snd the mrs to use as a weekend away type thing road trips abroad up to a week maybe 10 days.

Have been looking at mercedes slk both diesel and petrol r172 £12/£14k ish.

Reading up they seem quite problematic but before i keep looking am i missing anything obvious?

Bmw z4 love the front look but not behind
Porsche just nope dont do it for me.

Im more looking for wafting type comfort but still nice to drive, but that said still have a hankering for a civic typre r fk2. Totally different car i know but seem great although harsh for long road trips spain france swiss etc.

Head says slk 172 diesel heart amg 55 slk but i dont need the balls out sporty version of anything as it would be wasted but at the same time dont want the poverty spec of anything either as i will be spending time in it.

Any good cars to recommend £12k to £18k ?

Were mid 40s if that make a diffference ?

I'd say the SLK55 AMG is the pick as the engine makes journeys an event even at low speeds & when you feel like pressing on it's there to add to that:

There was a 55 amg i was going to go and probably buy last weekend. Came up on auto trader at £20k in a dealer in king lynn black one. It sold within the day snd i thought that will be snippersgate buying it and just flipping it and yep it appeared today at a healthy £4000 more just four days later so clearly done nothing to the car to warrant such an increase so im hesitant to buy one of them as they seem to try to control the prices by buying them all, but would consider a good private sale (which is what i prefer anyway as i dont feel you get anything laying extra to a dealer) nothing is ever covered with a problem etc so rather payless and buy private.
