VW Golf 1.5T evo

Been looking for a replacement for my aging 2006 auto 330d, it's starting to rack up some bills more due to its age and I'd like something a bit more modern ((DAB, BT Audio, etc), seen the Golf 1.5T Evo and sounds ok but not investigated further did to Covid, any one have/own or have experience of this engine?

Alternatives welcome, will I miss the grunt of a big diesel??

Is that the engine that is jerky on part throttle when it is cold?

I read about this before buying one and to be honest it put me off. Guy at work ordered a Leon last year and I told him about this, but we assumed it would have been fixed by now.

First thing he said to me when he got the car? "Yup, it does it"

I get the impression some of the latter engines(2020>) were doing much better now but 2018/19 still sound like there are some issues and it's basically pot luck.
I'm just walking away from a Passat I ahad my eye on because of this. Shame as it was the right car for many reasons but I'm not prepared to gamble on it.

Got that engine in our 69 plate Tiguan with DSG - no problems with rough running. Saw a lot of that reported before we ordered ours, but been fine. May have only effected earlier models?

It’s a reasonable motor, hauls the Tiguan around without too much problem. Not exactly fast and generally returns around 35mpg around town

Yes I have a 2019 Golf with the 1.5 tsi evo engine and it suffers from jerking, only the first 20 seconds of driving however it is pretty annoying!

I think you may miss the torque of the 330d

Drove a new Skoda Superb with this engine last week. Seemed like quite a good engine, no issues with jerking (though it was mated to a dsg), smooth, quiet, had ACT, nippy enough and averaged 50mpg on the motorway.

I had the predecessor engine wise but as I understand it it’s pretty much identical, the 1.4 150ps ACT DSG.

I had it for 4yrs/86k miles company car. And yes it was very hesitant at low speed, best example was when coming into a roundabout slowing down so as to filter onto it & getting back on the gas. The hesitation could be enormous, you really had to drive around it & it could easily catch out the unaware. I never worked out if it was small cc/turbo spool or the DSG gearbox (or both) which was dimwitted.

It was a great engine for what it was sowing machine smooth, quiet & relatively powerful & super economical (46 mpg average over those 86k miles) but as someone who also owns 6 cylinder/3L+ cars you’ll definitely miss the cc.

Yes that's my worry too, so good for overtakes and also makes it really relaxing to drive, I may end up looking at the GTI or something similar to get somewhere near it in a petrol.

The jerking can be fixed with a software update if you are that bothered. My girlfriends golf has this engine and it’s jerky but she doesn't notice or care so it’s not been done.

Hers is the 130 version and the engine is pretty characterless but is pokey enough and does fairly decent mpg without trying so she is happy with it.

Wife has the 1.5 150hp engine in her Leon. I find it’s a really decent engine, reasonable amount of poke and can be really economical.
