I have tried so far but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a used car with a 1.4 engine which the insurance wasn't too high.

We live in a good area but the cheapest Ive found so far ( without a box ) is about £1800

Probably no chance but maybe somebody might have a suggestion

thanks

My parents got me a 1.4 Peugeot 306 in this situation, probably too old now tho. I think the fact that it was built in the UK helped keep insurance down (cheaper parts, better availability?).

Generally trying to stay away from cars people commonly modify should help keep the premiums down.

What about an Alfa Mito, Skoda or Fiat Panda?

The engine size won't be the issue it's insurance groups that makes the difference.

Alfa Mito in 95/105/120/140/155/170 bhp depending on what quotes you get.

1.4T Astrac GTC Sport 140bhp

1.6 Fiesta Zetec S 120bhp

1.5 Mazda2 Sport

My lads first car was a Skoda fabia 1.4mpi and that was less than half the money of Polo’s/Fiesta/Corsa crews. He paid £1200 fc for his first year, crashed twice and only went up to £1400 for the second year ! Polos etc were all £2500 and up for the first year

Im paying £900 no black box on my polo (that is a 1.0mpi admittedly) and I got the insurance the day I passed my test last year aged 17.

10,000 pa, main driver is me.

For some reason it was far cheaper than anything else, including a Fabia. It’s different for everyone.

I’m looking at changing my car now that I have a job and I’m leaving sixth form in less than 2 months after my A-levels, before uni as I’m required to travel at uni (job and part of degree). So I decided to look for something that’s got longer legs. I’m 18 now and with 1 year’s NCB i can get insured on an 18 plate M140i for £1,900 (obviously not buying one, just was testing my quotes), a 1.5 golf dsg for 900, a 330e for 1200, my polo for 500-600 iirc (?), but my mum’s lexus IS300h is still low £2000s, bizarrely

We bought our oldest an Abarth 595 Turismo, she was provisional licence and 17 at the time, insurance was 800 ish, when she passed this rose to £1100.

Was quite surprised, also mx5 was coming in cheapish, in comparison polo's / corsa's at the time were 1500 - 2000+ on insurance. Shows, or at least in our case, that going the less common model for age can work out.

She's now 21, working and off the payroll, and cutting about in an a200 she just got and insurance is now £590

I’m 19 and for my gt86 insurance is 1300 for the year, that’s with a claim too! Any reason you think insurance is so high if you’re in a good area, worked out cheaper for me without parents.

Unfortunately if you’re looking for cheap insurance try cars that are seen as uncool, my gf has a 2010 1.6 diesel Kia Soul, she’s 19 with a claim and that’s faster than a lot of 1.4 petrols and she only pays £650 for the thing on insurance

My mates two teenage daughters run a bmw 116d and a Alfa 145 respectively. Insurance is lower on Bmw they libpve in South Wales might be worth looking at cost?

My fiancée just passed her test and had 1.2L Corsa with 79bhp insurance was £1750.

Just got her a tidy 208GTI with nearly 3x the power and her insurance is £1300.

Insurance is a really strange one. I'm 25 and I seen an M4 last month that I wanted but insurance turned out to be £3200 a year and £2800 for an m140i. A Golf R or RS5 where around £600-700. A C63AMG is £1000.

Pick a nice car and just pay the extra is my advice.

This is very much worth considering. An extra few £100 on the budget can get you a cheaper car with 2 - 3x the performance (And size / practicaliity) of a 80bhp econobox.
