Family Want to buy a Pickup Truck

Family of 5 and with kids, bikes, scooters, go-karts etc i need a larger car to move them all around.

I'm looking at a ford ranger and i have NO clue on VAT, BIK and all that.

I'm just regular guy who works at a regular company and is PAYE paid.

I have found a truck which is £29K+VAT, i understand if i add the vat onto the total price i will be paying £34,800 (£5800 in VAT) which is fine and nothing i can do about that.

Before i purchase I'm scared of the "hidden" costs of owning a commercial truck.

what is BIK and what would it cost me / year? (i would do around 6k mileage a year mainly kids runs, parks etc)

Will insurance kill me? (current family car is a kia and licence etc all clean, no claims)

Should i just drop the idea completely is it a massive headache!? .

any other things i should know?

If you're PAYE and the truck has nothing to do with your employer, then BIK doesn't come into it.

Its no different to buying any car/van/truck for personal use.

As a private buyer it will make no difference. Insure as private vehicle with o business use. Benefit in kind doeantbapply as your buying it personally for personal use

Yup, BIK is not a concern if not running it through a company.

Get an insurance quote and research servicing / running costs. And test drive one.. commercial vehicles are very practical but they don’t drive like cars.

thanks for the reply guys.

insurance for the car is around £600-800/y and roadtax is about £260 so not too bad.

So when i buy the car do i have to pay the cash deposit and VAT upfront? as i was looking todo a £5k deposit and then finance the rest (eg can i finance the VAT)

Buy a T6, I used to have a pickup but much prefer the van for family duties.

A few things to bear in mind if buying a truck privately.

Many dump it sites will charge you extra as it is a commercial vehicle.

Speed limits are reduced as it is a commercial vehicle.

Parking can be a pain as they are longer than many spaces.

Load space is compromised by the roller bed and when I had the hard top on one they condense and things in there get damp. Even the roller top does leak so not ideal.

More expensive on ferries due to height and length

My Ford Ranger (company car) drinks fuel when above 70 mph

To drive they are okay but ride quality is as one would expect for a cart sprung read bed.

Mine has all the toys you could want but I would never buy one with my own cash

its just to run the kids around with their bikes, trikes, gokarts etc to the local feilds or chuck all the bikes in the boot for a family bikeride at the local national parks (which have decent large unconstructed parking spots.

i certainly wouldn't be going tesco in it as i have a family kia car for that its more just to move the large kids stuff and no holidays or trips with it.

One small thing to bear in mind, with commercial insurance policies, you don't usually get the 'driving other cars' benefit.

3k a year?
Get a trailer,it will cost you less than the first years depreciation on the truck

thats ok i have done my insurance as just single driver, no claims etc seems ok.

I dont want a trailer, sometimes i think we just have todo these things !

If you want to scratch the pickup itch (and I won't judge you, been there, done that) in your situation I'd get something like this;

Would cost you less then a year's depreciation on a new one, wouldn't have to worry about getting it dirty/scratched, and if you hated it, you'd make most of your money back on selling it.

Before buying, I would take a close look at how big the actual load area is, you will struggle to get many bicycles in one, especially if you go for a hard top.

Pick up trucks are horrible things to use daily imo (though experience based on L200 rather than Ranger)

If you bide your time and find a truck that has already had a private owner you will save a bit of money as it will be ‘no vat’ . This generally means the price will be somewhere between the pre-vat and vat inclusive price of a VAT qualifying truck.

If your keeping your family kia remember you can one use your no claims on either the kia or the ranger not on both.

I bought a Ranger new in 2019 and it is a great vehicle, perfect for carrying bikes and other sports equipment, so fast to load up a family’s worth of bikes - just buy a tailgate bike pad.

It drives nicely, not that much different to a 4x4 in my opinion. All the gadgets you would want from a modern vehicle too.

Servicing is peanuts - only needs a service once per two years!

One note - the new 2022 Ford Ranger (as in fully new model) should be announced this year / next year, so you should aim for a bit of a discount on your purchase as it is soon to be the outgoing model.

This was my first pickup truck and I’m sure it will not be my last - same as you just something I wanted to do / had to do! And it’s better than I imagined, already helped us do so many more outdoor activities which with a regular car would have been too much hassle.

Rather than a pickup have you looked at a 5/6 seater van?
