2007 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GT TSI (170) AUTO - £2000 Budget

Hi all,

First post on PH. I have a budget of £2000 and looking to get a runaround for the next 1-2 years. I've been offered through family a 2007 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GT TSI (170) DSG AUTO for £2000 which I think is a reasonably good price and its in very good/clean condition. Needs to be an automatic for the wife

Any thoughts on if this is a good idea and anything that I should get checked by the garages? 120K on the clock. Any other options at this budget?

Would be good to hear all your thoughts.

careful of the dsg box, if they go wrong can be pricey. what about a swift sport?

I have heard there can be issues with the timing chain on this car. Does the '07 TSI engine fall into this category? If so, how much would it cost to replace? As I won't be spending much on the car if I purchase, I'm hoping I won't have to fork out too much on any issues which might come up

If you read the stories on the internet, this is an utterly unreliable engine linked to an unreliable gearbox. If you start spending money on having timing chains replaced then it will soon become an expensive car.

If it drives OK, changes gear smoothly, doesn't make any funny noises and doesn't burn any oil then I would personally take a chance on it.

If it goes wrong I would just put it on eBay as spares or repairs.

If you are going to constantly worry about it going wrong you may be better off leasing something instead.

I think that's a good deal for that car. You will have a bit of extra maintenance costs though. DSG transmission fluid service is every 40k so it should have 2-3 by now.

I can't quite remember but I think the timing belt service interval is about 60k. It could be that they are wanting to sell it because these maintenance items are due and they don't want to fork out for it. However the internet seems to suggest anything from 60k to 120k for the timing belt so if it hasn't been done at least once it'll probably need to be done soon.

They're turbo-charged, not super-charged. Being turbo-charged is nothing out of the ordinary. Most engines these days have a turbo, even the small ones.

No those engines are turbocharged and supercharged.

Twin-charged engine AND a DSG 'box. One's bad enough, but sod buying a car with both! And this is coming from someone who runs a 23-year-old Peugeot as their only car...
