Currently a student in the market for a cheap, reliable runaround with cheap insurance and have been looking at mk1, mk2 and mk3 Yaris’ however I’ve come across a 2012 one in top spec however it’s retailing at £2250 with over 148k miles from a dealer (I’d be hoping to getting that reduced to £2000). Would you go for a car with that kind of mileage. I’ve contacted the dealer in the question and apparently they can’t find any service history related to it so it either has a lost history or no/little history whatsoever. I’m not put off by it due to the mileage as Toyota Yaris are very reliable and it’s not history is more or less spotless and I’d be willing to give it a good once over myself and get a pre purchase inspection. Still is it worth a punt or would you leave it or try and get a bit more money off? Similar examples of between 90k-100k often go for £3000 and just over that

Personally I’d want some service history, if it’s not been serviced for 50,000 miles it can’t be a good thing. All cars are a punt at this budget but I think I’d look for another and not be too hung up on brands. A neglected Toyota might be a lot less reliable than a cared for Peugeot.

Agree with ZX10R, look elsewhere.

Personally I'd be happy to buy a car with 150k miles, but I'd need it to be presented with some evidence that it's had at least oil and filter changes semi-regularly. Otherwise it could run a bearing at any time, it's a needless £2k gamble IMO. Certainly traditionally, the reliability of Japanese engines came in exchange for reasonable TLC, they don't necessarily take well to too much abuse.

Thanks everyone. Think I’m going to avoid the one I’m looking at. Better not to take the risk it seems
