Hi all,

Very infrequent poster here, but really struggling to decide on our next car so looking for some help.

We are having a third child soon, and all three will be in child seats (6, 3 and new born).

I really don't want something like a S-Max. I really don't.

The preference would be a large SUV but unsure if they fit three child seats across the back. Budget is 18-20k. If I can get the seats into a Touareg I'd be most likely to get one of those, but the internet seems sparse on info as to whether this is possible?

I have considered older Q7s with the additional 2 seats, but these are really aging now. Also thought about disco sports but the additional seats dont seem to compatible with a child seat.

Any thoughts from those with experience of my situation would be appreciated.

I'd be looking at a Pug 5008

7 seats, but the 3 in the middle row are individual and can be independently slid back and fore to make space to fit 3 child seats. I had 3 high back boosters (Cybex Pallas) across the middle in ours and a few times had an adult in the middle of 2 Pallas for 2 hour motorway trips and it was fine (not an S Class experience of course!). It can also relatively comfortably hold adults in the 3rd row if needed. The interior generally is a really nice place to be - I'd say easily better than the 1st and 2nd gen Q7.

I had a rental 3008, must have covered 1200 miles in a relatively short space of time, one of the comfiest cars I’ve ever driven.

When my in-laws came to visit from Canada a couple of years back we hired a S-Max for a couple of weeks, I was really impressed by it.

Unless you’ve tried one before and didn’t like it I’d give one a go, they’re really quite decent.

The Pug is a good shout and I like the looks, although the engines arent exactly inspiring.

Multimac - I have looked at them but not really given them any serious thought. Will take another look as would be great to be able to put one on the back of something I want to drive.

I agree they so seem a decent bit of kit, but I just can't see past the MPV'ness of them. I haven't seen a newer one up close in the flesh though so may try and search one out. Either to put it to bed, or to see if it changes my mind.

You’ve a family of 5.
3 isofix seats is very limiting

I looked at so many options - ended up with a phase 1 S-Max, it’s a really good car far better than I had expected.
So much so.... we’re going to be replacing our ageing one with a new model one (or even gulp gulp gulp a Galaxy which does family duties )

I'd say the 5008 in GT Line spec is the pick if you don't fancy a Multimac solution.

What power do they have for up to 7 adults and luggage?

They're okay power wise 165bhp but a map will see you in the 200bhp mark.

I've not got a need for 3 isofix, but have 2 little ones and have looked at various options recently. I went through over 10 options and whittled it down to what I thought were the best 3.

Disco Sport was my favourite to look at, although it was the facelift option (P250) so over budget. Rearmost seats no good for isofix, but it does have 2 on the second row and 1 in the front passenger seat. My wife could fit between the 2 when set up on the second row, but it was cosy - fine for short journeys. This was with a stage 1 and 3 seat in situ, one forwards and one backwards. The second row is a rear bench. Very good head and leg room, but personally the facelift looks to have made it a much nicer place to be.

5008 very impressive. As above, 2nd row has 3 independent seats and flat floor. They come very well equipped. I drove the 1.2 130PS petrol auto, which is 3cyl and felt nice to drive - for a 7 seat family car. It's only FWD but can be had with grip control, although if I wanted 4x4 at a similar price point I'd probably go for Kodiaq or Taracco. The latter has front seat isofix too and the Kodiaq can have as option but obviously depends on whether having your oldest up front and partner between the two little ones would be acceptable! Can be handy on long journeys when they need attention though.

5008 was the most roomiest across the second row. But just note the panoramic roof does eat into head space a fair chunk. 5008 also has a really good boot, circa 950L in 5 seat mode and underfloor storage in the rear (on the facelift at least). Some versions come with built in sun blinds and pull down tables on the rear of the front 2 seats, which can be handy for little ones.

Last one was Kia Sorento. But again latest version and the only one that worked for me was the 1.6 petrol self charging hybrid. These only came out last October I think and the cheapest is a fair chunk over £30k. I was told 7 months build time at present too, so discounted it. But it is an interesting proposition with the 7 year 100k warranty and the latest version has great spec. I liked the side cameras which come on in the dash when the indicators were activated to show the blind spots, but a pricey car at this moment in time. I.also felt the 5008 had a better boot and second row, although reviews say the 3rd row in the Sorento is better (but the 5008 better than the Disco Sport).

Out of the above, I'd say the 5008 best ticks your criteria. Except perhaps driving appeal when not being used as comfortable family transport. The 1.6 petrol has 180 PS, which isn't bad when looked as a whole package.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Will try and take a look at all of the above. May give multimac a call as the concern is the baby seat. From what I have seen online, it isn't the most comfortable of baby seats, and is only useable up to 9 months or so.

Ours is absolutely brilliant. The 130ps 1.2 is a gem in such a light car for its size at 1,250kgs.

We went through this, there isn't a car on the market that will cater for 3 kids seats well that isn't an "MPV" of some kind. Anything with 3 equally sized rear seats is going to be compromised as an "MPV".

We bought a smax 9 years ago and still have it, its not a terrible car at all, get a cheap one for family duties and another car. I have flirted with an R-Class over the years but its not a great car to drive really even with the V8.

You can get one of the multimac things to convert you estate or hatch back seat to 3 seats but I wouldn't trust them. There's no way around it, get 2 cars.

The only thing is say you have 5 adults 2 kids in it full tank of fuel and some luggage that’s easily 500kg extra weight - this is where my challenge that a 1.2 Ltr will not be up for the job IMHO.

Yes I agree, in the 5008 the 130ps is probably a stretch but fine on the 3008.
