Hi all,
Apologies if this is the incorrect section to be posting this. I'm new to the world of private plates, so please bear with.

I recently bought a car (private sale). The car had a private plate (nothing precious) that the seller was happy to include in the sale. He has given me V750 document which shows when he bought the plate. There is also a V778W Retention Document from when he took the plate of his other previous car. (Assuming after that, he moved the plate to the car that I have purchased, but no docs). Obviously both documents are in his name.

Having since bought the car, I have now received the new V5C which shows the private plate Reg and the car details with my name etc. Am I expecting to receive anything else in relation to the plate? Or any further document to prove that I am the owner of the plate?

What about if I want to return the car to the original Reg and sell the private plate? How would I go about it? I'm certainly interested to see what I can get for the plate, before I decide to take it off the car.

Any help, suggestions and advice would be gratefully appreciated

Kind regards
Rick

You won't receive any other paperwork to prove you "own" the plate ,it's just a car with a number plate on it you bought .

Check on the DVLA site, but I think you can do it online and receive your own V778 document after they approve the taking off of the private plate - it will usually revert to its original registration.

You'd then have your own V778 document to assign to another vehicle or transfer to a new owner. The registration would be 'on retention' and can be traded as required.

The above is correct, but just so you are aware, it costs about £80 to put a plate on retention which you’ll need to do before you sell it.

As above,if you want to retain the plate it costs £80 which includes the fee to put it on to another car or sell it and the car will be replaced with it's original number or you could put the car back to it's original number and lose the plate with no charge.

Thanks for the replies all. That makes a lot of sense.

Can I generally advertise the plate for sale without having taken them off the car yet? I just want to guage interest and price achievable.

How long does the process take? say from doing the online retention bit to actually receiving the retention document?
