Hi there,

With a budget of £35k and the remit being 2 cars, one capable of wafting family of 4 to Spain once a year, the other to be a fun toy.

I am thinking Diesel Luxo-barge and 2 door sports.

W221 S-Class 350cdi and a Boxster S

F01 730d SE and a BMW Z4 3.0 (or maybe a Z4M)

Jaguar XJ (X351) 3.0 Diesel and a Jaguar XK (X150)

My friend is not keen on SUV's. Both cars to be garaged when not in use.

Any other suggestions or combinations welcome.

Also, are the petrol engines in these big cars now pretty frugal? If 25mpg+ then petrol would be preferred.

Thanks.

370Z Nismo a proper drivers car & with a sensible starting price/running costs & then this is the pick:

SLK55 AMG

If you want luxury for those family trips then this Genesis Saloon ticks every box (haggle on both this & the 370Z above & 36k should get you both) although it's petrol you'll see a real world 28mpg on a run:

Keep an eye out & ones with around 40k on the clock will be 15-17k.

Also your friend should make sure if he goes diesel he get's a ULEZ model.

VX220 for fun and any decent sized Merc for sensible.
VX220 prices are steadily on the up and they really are fantastic toy, I loved mine so much, only sold it as I was moving abroad for a while.
I also had a Merc C Class when I came back to the UK (a C320 CDi), which was great, actually pretty quick for what it was, so I'd get another one and a VX in your shoes.

I'll pass on the VX220 reccomendations.

I think a C-Class or a 335d is too small, with sons he'll be wanting space. S-Class seems to be the leader.

Cheers.

May I ask why a VX isn't for you?

Based on your comment then, how about a Cayman/Boxster and an S Class?

A VX220 isn't for me as neither of the cars are for me. I'll 'pass on to my friend the recommendation of' a VX220. It's a great idea as it happens!
