I have an idea of what I'm after, but I want to see what the PH hive mind comes up with.

It's quite a fussy list, here goes

Budget is around £12k, but lower is better

Any fuel type except diesel. Willing to consider hybrids/plug-ins/full electric
Hatchback preferred, but will consider saloons if the rear seats fold down
0-60 in under 7 seconds
Automatic as I do mostly city driving
Mileage should be under 80k ideally
Traders preferred
No dodgy dealers/car supermarkets/admin fees
Nothing that been in a crash or has outstanding finance, etc
Nothing that has a big bill looming such as cambelt, unless considerably cheaper
4/5 doors preferred
Needs to be ULEZ compliant
Annual tax should be under £300 a year
Not a badge snob, so all brands considered
Not a Ford Mondeo

edit: Just thought of something else, needs to be VW Golf-sized to BMW 3-series sized, ideally. Don't be recommending me Fiat 500s or Mercedes S-classes!

A250 is a good shout maybe, they seem to be a bit too high mileage at my price bracket though.

I was looking at Giulietta QV's too

I was looking at the Alfa before! Pretty nice.

Might swerve the BMW at 5+ owners, there might be a reason for that, even at 8 years old.

Audi is an interesting idea, though I'd sooner avoid VAG stuff if it can be helped.

Really not keen on the mini though
