We went through the new car buying process, chose the spec with a few options added. Paid a deposit and after some other changes due to the configurator finally signed a contract. Probably two weeks start to finish.
All good, week or so later dealer updates with a build date, then next day we get an email stating that last night he checked our order and one of the options we’ve chosen triggers some others which haven’t been accounted for so it’s x much more and I’ll send you over a new contract to sign.
I replied stating I felt this was there issue, it looks to me like they are trying to increase the purchase price, but in an underhand manner.
Yesterday, new contract arrived, I haven’t signed, today another with a note it will be resent every day.
Can the dealer do this?
Can I just ignore them insist we only recognise my original order?
Could I just insist that if the dealer feels put out then they can cancel my order and refund my deposit?
Thanks in advance

How much is X more?

Have you checked the online brochure/configuration to see if they’re right?

IME, having an extra option or 2 on a car makes the dealer about 6/10ths or fk all difference to what they make selling the car so I can’t see what the endgame would be if you feel they’re trying you for more money….

And if they can’t build the car you ordered without the extra bits then they can’t supply it, it’s pretty simple.

Sometimes people just make mistakes.

So if they can’t build without then surely they must cancel and refund my deposit? I just feel they knew about it and are trying to claw back some discount?

Knock the options off that trigger the other ones if you don’t want to pay for them.

It’s not a BMW is it? I tried to spec one with what I wanted and it added on a load of ‘Packs’ with stuff I didn’t want and wouldn’t want to pay for. In the end I went back to a base spec car.

Yes, that is the other option available, I have a feeling we may have gone past the no more changes point.

Of course, if you don’t want to pay the extra just ask them to cancel the order. Pretty simple stuff

The manufacturer has probably changed the option to only be available as part of a pack including other items. Your order can either be amended to include the pack, amended to remove the option or cancelled.

Dealer margin on factory options is the same as on the rest of the car and, in my experience, they will give you the same discount on all of them.

It does happen sometimes the Manufacturer will add something to a pack & make it no longer individually available, just take that option off if you don't want to pay extra.

First, that's terrible customer service. If they've made a mistake and written up a contract for an invalid configuration, they should ring you up and apologise and explain. They should clearly outline your options in this case (pay the extra, reselect different spec, or cancel the order entirely). Saying 'we'll send this again every day until you sign' just seems... childish.

I suspect if you inspect the small print of your original contract, you'll find that you don't actually have the right to insist that they fufill their end of it, sadly. It's also worth pointing out there's a shortage of new car stock and quite long waiting lists, so it's likely that they could easily sell your car to someone else. This may sadly be behind their unhelpful attitude.

So I guess you can't insist on them fulfilling the original order, but I would hope they'd offer you the three options already outlined by another poster.

Thanks for your reply, I’ll most probably remove the option that’s causing us the problem.
