Looking for opinions if this is worth it or not, put a deposit on an Impreza WRXS with 59k miles on it. Was going to purchase on condition it passed its MOT. It's failed on a few things. These being a major exhaust leak, some suspension components corroded and a tyre needing replaced (not a big deal). Advisories for a wheel bearing and the sub frame going rusty (first time its been mentioned in its MOT history so rust cant be more than a year old.)

I'd be paying £8k. I still want it and I'm not planning on carrying out any work other than preventative and reparative stuff but will this still be worth it. Underside is showing signs of corrosion but isn't that bad. Plan is to get it back to standard then go the forged route. How much can I realistically ask off of it?

Cheers.

It really depends on mileage/age and general condition of paint, history etc. But I imagine not a lot...

I know this isn't the answer you want, but spending that, plus forging will get you a tidy STI money. I have a twinscroll JDM STI, and avoided the 2.5 due to the inevitable requirement for rebuild/forging.

Sounds like pretty common failures to me, just make sure the corrosion hasn’t gone too far.

Is the seller going to make the required repairs and get it a clear MOT? If so I don't see any discount would apply, if they want to sell as it is then i'd suggest £4-500 discount wouldnt be unreasonable

Thanks for the replies guys, I've decided not to go for it. My plan is for something that's reliable enough but also fun and a bit in your face to drive as my do it all car. I only do 4k miles a year as I work 2 miles from my house so I don't need incredibly good fuel economy. I'm a fan of Japanese cars but also a dad so need space for my wee one. Currently looking at Mazda 3 MPS's.

Just as an FYI

Issues to watch out for on the MPS are

Rod's - Known to thrown one every now and again.
Turbo - Supplied with K04 turbo and they aren't the most reliable especially if they've been breathed upon (mods). This isn't a "just an MPS" issue.
Timing Chain - Slapping on start up is a sign of worn/stretched chains.

The later engine is more reliable but you have to make sure its been looked after and cared for with the right maintenance and care.

I wouldn't not say they are any more reliable over a WRX. Infact, if you go for a 2.0 Boxer engine, you'd find it far superior reliability wise, especially if the car its come in is stock. But you'll be sacrificing age and mileage to get one or paying through the nose for an older car with low miles.

A more reliable JDM hot hatch is something like the Type R. It doesn't have a turbo to send things flying (though you can turbo them and they take boost well). The Type R is a very different beast to an impreza or an MPS but its certainly at the more reliable end of the scale of JDM (hot) hatch type cars. It's a different car to drive and takes a different mindset to get the best of it. However, they are equally as rewarding in the right circumstances.

For reference I've had Mazda 6mps, 7 x Impreza's (STI's and Limited Editions inc.) as well as FN2 and EP3. Of all the cars the Honda was by far easiest to maintain and most reliable. The naturally aspirated nature of the engine and the need for it to be rev'd out added quite a smile factor but for around town they were just humdrum.

The MPS was honestly just not fun at all and got rid of it (though the 6 is quite different to the 3).

The Imprezas were for all intense and purpose some of most fun and definitely the fastest point to point cars i've ever owned and i've owned a lot of quick capable vehicles. However, the downside is they need proper care, a regular amount of use, proper warming up and cooling down before giving them the proverbial "beans", lots of preventative maintenance and more often or not they do throw up bills for stuff. That wouldn't stop me searching for one though. Overall the experience is worth in IMHO. They sound, feel, comments, community all add to the ownership experience and i've never regretted owning one no matter how much i had to spend on it. I've only regretted passing them on - but i am a bit of a fan I guess biggrin
