I appear to be stuck between a Renaultsport Megane RS at around £10k or, what I’d really like, a BMW 4 Series GC 428i. The issue is that 428i GC’s are like rocking horse st! There are three on AT, one is a Cat S write off so I’d rather not and the other has higher miles than I’d like.

Is there anything I’m missing? Audi’s bore me, I’m not quite 50 yet so a Merc doesn’t appeal. A Jag again feels like I’d immediately age by ten years and I don’t feel that old yet! Anyone got any other suggestions?

M135i can be had for that money. Much more interesting engine than the 428i and still plenty spacious enough?

Really don’t like the look of them. At all. Also concerns about N54 reliability are there and to be considered.

N20 could be said to have issues given a class action lawsuit was settled in the US in December - "BMW denies all the allegations in the lawsuit and says it will settle the class action to avoid the cost and risk of a trial.".

I'll be honest it was enough to put me off N20/28i engine. Ended up with a 2015 Mondeo, bigger with much lower mileage, never looked back.

M135i is the N55 single turbo engine, not the N54 twin turbo.

I'd go for N55 6 cylinder engine over any BMW 4 pot

GTC VXR a smidge behind the RS Megane in the handling department but a better daily & you can get a nice one for between 10-15k:

Or the 308 GTI

Also if you want a GC then I'd stretch the budget/haggle & get the 435i GC:

Seems like a bit of an odd choice between the 2 cars. The Renault is one of the best hot hatches for a long time, the BMW is a good saloon car, but isnt very exciting!

Sorry editing as it's a 5 door hatch rather than a saloon.

The Megane doesn't have rear doors, so why the need for the 4 series GC? Wouldn't a regular 4 series do the job? There are far more 428i around with only 2 doors and it may even be possible to get into a 435i.

If you need 4 doors then that rules out the Renault anyway and you'd be better looking at other hot hatch options.

Alfa Giulietta 1.8tbi is a smart looking car. I think it'd be the QV for that money but maybe even the face-lift Veloce which is basically the same car. Auto only but apparently its a nice box and a decent sounding engine.

I much prefer the look of the GC over the standard 4 series and the extra doors will really help. I test drove a Megane RS but the usual dealer allowed half a mile up the road and back again in traffic didn’t give me a true feeling of it’s capabilities.

I guess alot may depend on what you want to use the car for?

The 4 series GC is a good car. The 428 is ok, but its not anything special performance wise. Its nice enough to drive but the one to go for is the 435i by a country mile. Its a much nicer, smoother, engine. It drives very nicely. The 428i is very much just a faster version of a lower 420i. Not much in it in my experience, where as the 435i is another level.

With the BMW you'll get, well a BMW. Nice interior. I agree the GC looks great. It has the extra rear legroom/doors. Useable boot. Equipment is up to par and its just a nice comfortable place to be.

The RS Megane however is a very different animal. Its a hatchback and is useable. Doesn't have the rear room or boot space of the GC (or coupe for that matter) 4 series. The interior quality is good for a hothatch / renault, but depends alot on what interior you go for. The standard seats are ok, but the sports recaro's are much nicer and in all honesty, i find them more comfortable. For around town its kind of like any other 2.0 hot hatch, you can feel its power but you won't need it and it'll drive and do everything you need it to.

Its when you get it on an open road that it comes into its own. Honestly, for the money up to 15k i would say its pound for pound one of the best drivers cars you can buy. It is difficult for owners to think of a car better for the money. Its agile, adjustable, so sharp. The power never feels like it isn't enough. It really is on point. Why so many owners keep them or struggle to figure out "what would come next" -

https://rsmegane.com/threads/what-would-come-next....

Check out the RSMEGANE site and ask some questions. They are a friendly bunch and know lots about the car.

Personally, i would buy the Megane, on the basis that you won't lose money really at that price. Drive it for a week on some decent roads - treat it like an extended test drive. You can always sell it on and get your 428 (i would get a 435) and you won't have really missed out on anything.

Any 435i in my price range has higher miles than I'd like or is, well, outside my price range.

I am not sure what your mileage requirements are (?) but with some haggling this could be had for £15k on 66k -

This has popped up locally. I’m tempted but the price is a little high. I just found a great car on Auto Trader:
