Giulietta Sportiva 170 very good cars that are often overooked so you can get a nice one.

Or you can get the TBI ofr that budget:

The VFM option is the Astra Elite Nav 150 you're looking at a well spec'd car that your friend would be happy with.

Another very good option is the i30 Turbo, they come nicely spec'd with a 185bhp engine to get you down the road:

Honda Civic is a good shout. Judging from your username, I guess you are in Scotland?

This looks like a good one, one of the non-turbo 1.8s are very reliable

If you are willing to travel, this one is newer and lower mileage, but a bit dearer

Thanks ZX10, is there any from my list you'd avoid? I really like the look of the Volvo!
As a Volvo driver who has a V40, the only caveat I would give is that the styling means that it is a bit lower than other cars and getting in may not be the easiest for the less agile - the headroom in the back is not great nor access into the rear. Boot is also not fantastic for a Volvo.

My wife much prefers getting into her Polo than my Volvo and to be fair, I know what she means - you do kind of fall into the seats a bit!

I think that's the best option.
