TL;DR
Need to replace family car, want a long termer - 10yrs plus.
Should I stretch the budget and buy a used Tesla? or wait for the Ioniq 5? or stick to ICE.

Okay, bear with me...
Family car needs replacing in the next few months as the XC90 is end of lease in September. 3x kids, ranging from 6 to 17 but eldest has bought her first car and the lad spends more time out with me in the "project car" anyways...

So looking for a solid 4 seater, to fit 5 on family trips and holidays (if only for the next couple of years).
New way of working looks like it's here to stay, so minimal mileage PA (maybe 5k a year?)
Budget is £20k cash, ideally no further credit (but borrowing is cheap...)

Contenders;
  • Audi SQ5 LINK - c.£20k, Not seen one in the flesh, but looks good to me on screen.
  • Audi A8 LINK - c.£20k, Tech keeps the wife happy as long as it's working...
  • Volvo XC60 LINK - c.£25k, Volvo a safe bet, last 2x family cars have been from the Swedish mafia...
  • Tesla Model S LINK - c.£30k, Wildcard with P85 creeping into "budget"
Obviously the bottom two are out of budget on paper, but the thought of minimal fuel, servicing and tax kind of make sense (man-maths) in the Tesla's favour. There's a lot of other EVs coming out this year and next, do we buy a car for a year or two and get onto a waiting list for the VW ID4 or Hyundai Ioniq 5?

I've burnt myself out going from Tesla to RS6 back to Ioniq 5 and so on.
I thrust myself into the gauntlet and open the discussion to PHrs.

If you like executive saloons, then the S Class and Jaguar XJ are the ones to go for.

Agree with the S class, the wife had an awful experience with the local Jag dealership and I hope those involved drown in their own sweat and excrement.

10 years is an awful long time to keep a car. Will you actually see it through?

The SQ5 would be a good family car. The interior does look a little dated compared to the latest Audi products but it is a seven year old car so it is to be expected.

No doubt the A8 is a good car but six yrs old already, by the time you've done with it it'll be 16yrs old.

Tech doesn't age, and chasing tech rarely ends well.

Highly unlikely but SWMBO has proclaimed it. Probably more like 4yrs before she gets itchy feet…

Me? I have my own project car that keeps me amused/distracted.

Very good point, which kind of puts the tech question back in Tesla’s court - what with decent OOA updates and already at a higher baseline than the infotainment found in Audi’s, Volvos and the like.
