A friend wants to buy a small automatic hatchback. Budget ten grand, probably tends towards something newer with tech. No interest in the driving side of things. Whats to be recommended?

She would also be willing to get something older/cheaper but would need convincing it was safe and reliable. Jazz?

Honda also do a Jazz Hybrid

If the concept of a hybrid is too frightening for her, then how about a VW Up?

If she wants something really new and with lots of tech, what about these?

Toyota Aygo

Hyundai i10

Yaris if the hybrid thing is of interest, i10 if old-school automatic and dependable is more important. OH had an i10 automatic, 2017 plate Premium SE which was fully loaded (sunroof, heated seats and steering wheel, sat nav, climate control, etc) which performed faultlessly for the 3 and a half years we had it. Only sold as she got an e208 through work.

My mum has had her Yaris hybrid for 4 years now and I drive it here and there so am quite familiar with it.

Very cheap to run, averages 50mpg around town in summer, 40 in winter. Only needs to fill it up once a month, £0 road tax if you get one pre April 2017 or else it's £145 for the year, 5 year warranty which can now be extended to 10 years, on a year by year basis as long as you continue servicing the car with main dealer. Most people complain about the CVT gearbox but once you get used to it, it's not bad.

If you want the one with the most spec, Excel trim is the one you want or else if you want one that's a bit more 'fashionable' the Design trim is the one.

In terms of reliability, my dad ran one for 100k miles in the space of two and a half years and nothing went wrong and it surprisingly held up well in terms of wear and tear.

Thanks all some useful information.

Am i right in thinking that the hybrids are targets for cat thefts? We will in se london and one was nicked on our street a few weeks ago so its a consideration.

Depends on the car, Prius and Auris from the Toyota range and CT and NX if I'm correct from the Lexus range are the ones to avoid. Don't think the Yaris is a target as the cat is not visible under the car neither are they any of the newer hybrids.
