Apologies if this has been covered before.

I'm after a new car and have narrowed it down to one of the above. I want something I can use everyday, hatchback, with enough tech to keep me happy and something with a bit of go in it..

I did consider the Leon Cupra and did have one for a few weeks but just didn't gel with it..

Option 1;

Golf GTI performance

Option 2;

ST with Performance Pack

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106214...

Option 3 ;

Something I haven't considered?

I'm not interested in going down the route of an old work house and weekend toy, I just want 1 nice vehicle I can use daily but also get some fun out of too when I want to.

Cheers for any help or suggestions,

Of those two I'd take the GTI.. however if you didn't gel with the Cupra Leon I don't think the GTI is going to be miles different.

Just looked at the links to your choices. At that budget the Civic type r seems to be the class leader. Unless you’re really put off by the styling I think that’s one I’d be test driving.

I was in this situation a couple of years back, and went for the GTI PP. Best advice would be to try and get a long test drive of both (easier said than done, but that helped me with my decision)! I didn't get on too well with the hard suspension and 19's on the Golf, and I think the Focus is a bit better in that regard. I did like the adaptive cruise and some of the tech on the golf, but ford's latest system is also v. good. Seats on the Focus I found a bit narrow and uncomfortable, but that could be a personal thing. They are both good cars.

As a side note, GTI 7.5 prices seem crazy at the moment. I paid less than the one in your link for a ~2 month old one with all the options and about 900 miles on the clock. Strange times..

this

i was looking at 3 year old GTI PP's as my next car but with prices currently as high as 24-25K I may need to think again.

Is it the lukewarm reception of the mk8 that's causing this ?

Drive Blind, I think that is very much the case. I know of a couple of people that have been right through the GTI range over the years, but will be stopping at the 7.5 as the 8 seems like a bit of a downgrade. Haptic buttons, lack of gas bonnet strut, worse interior materials and doesn't look as good.

I've not driven one, but the 8 does appear to be a fair bit better dynamically than the 7.5. The prices of 7.5's were high anyway due to the factory shutodowns and transition to the Mk8 Golf, and then Covid hit.

Out of those two it would be the ST but get some test drives in as that way you'll know which you prefer.

Option 3:

308 GTI cracking steer & great value for money too:
