I’m on the lookout for an Estate, Petrol or Diesel, good on fuel, not too expensive on road tax and parts not extremely expensive. I go offered a 2008 Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi for £1200. The dealer sold it on eBay today for £800. Just wish he would have told me. As I had a work van but they need it for another one of the guys in work.

Any recommendations please?

An old Volvo 850 or v70, the retro 'tax' seems to have bypassed all but the very very best, still buy a cracker at your budget. Many like the Saab 95 wagon also, but with the covid prices I'm not sure what a bag and a half will get you.

A good 850 with the 2.5 petrol motor in a nice spec will never depreciate and are tough old barns!!

Great cars (got a EX 2.2), been pretty reliable for the 100k miles I have put on it. On 162k now.

They can have a few issues, cracked exhaust manifold, failed auto boot motors, generally pretty decent spec for the age and will do 45-50 at sensible speeds. They are massive inside.

We have a couple of these. Exceedingly capable, conventional springs and so far extremely reliable.

Saab 9-3 estate. Most likely the 1.9 diesel. I’ve got one that I paid a grand for, it’s not perfect and needs some stuff sorting but for a grand you can’t go far wrong. Also most of it is Vauxhall stuff so easy to get hold of.

Not a bad suggestion. It’s trying to find one that’s in good condition.

Mk2 Focus 1.6 petrol or 1.8tdci. Avoid the 1.6tdci though, they are renowned for problems with turbos, DPFs and injectors.

That’s a good choice. It’s hard finding one.

Also consider the Kia Ceed (and I guess Hyundai i30)

I had a 2008 1.6D Hatch for commuting.
Sold on to a Colleague and now on 200K with very few problems
Pre 2010 No DPF or DMF. Cam Chain.

I just advertised my Saab 9-5 Vector Sport 1.9 TiD on PH yesterday at well below 1.5k. Would have kept it but for the Khan tax in London coming in later this year.

I think this will work.... https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/11204038

The car is temporarily in Waltham Abbey due to building works at home. Can bring it back for the day though if E11 is more convenient.

Looks great. I’m based in Liverpool, it maybe a little far to travel.

No problem, I didn't know you were that far away.

As mentioned, mk2 focus estate. I bought an 08 reg 1.8 tdci titanium 2 years ago for £1100, did 25k miles in it and sold it the other week for £1100. Other than servicing and a few consumables it didn’t cost anything.
