10k Low Annual Mileage Load Lugger - Petrol/Diesel?

Hi all.
Posted a couple of "what car" topics over the last year or so but it looks like due to personal circumstances (my wife is looking increasingly in need of a wheelchair), our little Mini Clubman is not going to be much use to us for too much longer. On the flip side, car shopping!!!
My rough list of criteria are:
- big enough for 2 adults, 2 kids (11 and 8), dog and a boot big enough for a wheelchair so naturally I'm thinking an estate.
- low (~8k) annual mileage with lots of short journeys so naturally looking at petrols but this really restricts the options. Diesel definitely a bad idea isn't it?
- automatic is a must
- something thats even a smidge interesting/nice to drive so no basic Focus/Astra type things.
- 10k(ish) budget
Had an E91 330i before and absolutely loved that car so I'm looking at those again although the wife thinks running a 3l petrol is a bad idea and that something smaller is a much better idea. Also had a mk2 Octavia VRS which I liked so thats kinda floating around on my radar. Few F series 3-series Tourings floating around for just above my budget but mostly diesels...
Anything else?
- The odd Passat R36 drops into my budget but I think theres about zero chance of getting one of those past SWMBO.
- Merc C/E Class options?
- Audi Avants?
- any mildly interesting SUV/MPV options?
