What is the general consensus behind cars with mulitple owners?

The car is a Jag XFR - 2011 first reg and just 48k (verified) I have done a hpi check and it does state that it has had 7 owners - data below

I appreciate that orignally expensive cars which are costly to maintain can have many owners but would this history put many off?

Is there any way of finding out contact info of previous keepers to see if there was anything wrong with the car which might the reason it is moved on so quickly?

That does seem like a lot of owners for a 2011 car!

Especially an XF-R as it isn't the sort of car people would need to swap because it wasn't practical any more.

I bought a 2006 BMW Z4 18 months ago that had 7 previous owners, but it doesn't seem too unusual with 2 seaters when parenthood happens, etc. And the first "owner" seems to have been BMW UK so that wouldn't have been for long.

Sadly I don't think there is any way to get previous owners' details any more thanks to GDPR - you don't even get the previous keeper when you get your V5 now.

Who are you potentially buying from? The only two that I would want further info on is the current 3 month owner and the 3 month owner before them.

I think the 4 year ownership shows it’s had a stable life, the only worry is that after they sold it, the next buyer found an expensive fault after 12 months and now it’s getting passed about.

Unless you have been given a genuine reason for the last 6 months of ownership? Get it checked over by a mechanic or specialist and if it’s all good it doesn’t matter anyway.

Have you also tried googling the reg, it’s surprising what you can find on forums if it has had problems.

Does look a little odd, some very short ownerships there.

The original owner must have had some money as this depreciation must have been brutal.

Reality is, you will never know why its had so many owners. Even if you spoke to the previous owner, you could find out why they sold after 3 months but unless he/she knows the history, you will have to take a punt.

Is it from a garage? At least you have a form of protection there.

I would look at forums for common issues with these cars in terms of engine/gearbox as these are the things that will cost £££ if they break and if there is a way to tell whether the car has these issues.

Check the MOT history to see if anything odd flags up, it should also give you the mileage the MOT's and if you marry that up with the owner dates, you might find several barely drove it and could have been garaged etc.

Other than that, its basic due diligence when buying a new car.
Check the paperwork to see what has been done to the car, has it been looked after.
Are the tyres premiums? Says a lot about an owner to me

the last 2 short owner spells might be down to covid and furlough. The owners employment circumstances changing at short notice.

Saying that, you're never going to find out.

It's not uncommon for big capacity relatively affordable putchase wise cars to go through a high number of owners.

They're aspirational purchases, but the reality of big fuel bills and associated running costs, means folk move them on fairly quickly after the initial honeymoon period has worn off.

Check condition and service history, and if it all stacks up, then I wouldnt worry too much about the number of owners.

Yes, but also a high number of owners can be a positive, with lots of little jobs getting done on the car over time that a single owner might have budgeted on. Unexpected fuel bills is a biggie IME.

It's not that unusual on this type of car ime.

As someone else has already stated the previous 2 short term owners could purely be down to CV/furlough.

The 1yr + months first owner could have been JLR themselves - OV/OY reg?

If if has decent service history, presents and drives well then crack on and buy it before someone else beats you to it!

Cheers,

Chris

Previous owner may have rejected the car (perhaps after reading some of the excellent consumer advice on here!)

That would not be encouraging...

I had a 2011 TTRS in 2017 that had 6 previous owners, I was sceptical at first but the paperwork with it was the most I had ever seen on a car. It had been really really well looked after its whole life.

Could have easily been put off by it but it turned out to be a great example.

To be fair, we are the 4th owner of both our cars. Both 2015 reg, one only had 15k on the clock when we bought it AUC last year and 3 previous owners.

We asked BMW about the 15k one and they said it was initially a demonstrator car originally. Wife has added 9k miles in 9 months and hasn’t skipped a beat.

Mine was owned by someone who had loads of BMWs according to the dealer I bought it from, said he had an M3 and an M5 and had them all under extended warranty.

They were both in top condition, inside and out so clearly looked after.

Reality is though, I have no idea how they were driven previously
