Vrs, a4 177 s line or alternative?
Discussion
Hi there folks,
Around 11k budget. Going to view both the 2015 vrs auto and manual and a4 sline auto and manual today. Any one had past experiences of owning these?
Looking for a fun car to drive with a few mod cons and enjoyable to sit?
I’ve also seen Mercedes c220 auto amg for around the same price.
Thanks.

Yep had both cars, a 66 plate VRS Tdi for 2 years and an A4 S line Quattro 177tdi, again for a abouts 2 years.
Both good cars. The VRS was more economical averaging around 50mpg. The A4 was early 40's most likely down to Quattro. However the Quattro made it quicker especially in the wet.
the VRS had more space and a larger boot + more kit like SatNav and other safely nonsense.
Both good steady cars. If you need the space, go for the Skoda. The A4 has more grip and was slightly more refined on the motorway.

Thanks for the replies lads. Took both cars out a test yesterday. A4 was very responsive and was still good fun to drive especially with the paddle shift gears. I think it has the edge.
Thanks for the other suggestions. I have looked at the likes of the Seat Fr 184 but the interior of the Audi seems to do it for me. I was looking at the Alfa Romeo Guiletta but they are like hens teeth over here in Northern Ireland.
The only thing that I can think of is that the Audi 177 is automatic and on 80k miles. Dealer is looking £11,700 for it. Is this value for money or should I be worried about a automatic on that sort of mileage?
Cheers again.

As long as the oil in the S-tronic gearbox has been changed on schedule, it should be fine. The gearbox oil needs replacing every 40,000 miles, so it should have had two done by now. Check the service history to make sure it's been done. It should cost about £200 at an independent specialist to replace the oil. If the dealer says it's a sealed unit and it doesn't need replacing, then he's bulls
tting you. In the past you could have haggled £200 off the price if it hasn't been done, but in the current climate probably not.
Is it a 6-speed or a 7-speed? The 6 speed units are stronger.
Other things to check are the flywheel, which should be fine unless it's on a remapped car - you can check if the flywheel is ok by putting the car in D with the handbrake on and taking your foot off the brake - if it's on its way out it'll make a nasty metallic grinding sound. Also, as the car is over 5 years old it will be due for a new timing belt, which needs doing at 5 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. A new timing belt will be around the £400 mark. Timing belt failure will result in catastrophic and very expensive damage to your engine.

I know cars are a bit harder to find in NI but test drive an Insignia SRI Nav the newer car is a clear step up from the old model with a nice bit of poke. Thanks for the other suggestions. The car below is only a crossing away should the test drive go well.
