Having gone down to one car in August last year due to working from home, I've become increasingly bored/frustrated by our 2015 diesel Passat Estate.
This is made worse by the part ex/WBAC valuations I'm getting, which are coming in between £10.5k guaranteed and £11.3k unseen.
For a while I've had my eye on a BMW G31 touring, either the 540i or a 530d xdrive. As with anything at the moment that's nearly new and premium, the prices just aren't budging and if anything are going up. The cheapest 540i on the trader at the moment is £32,780 for a 17 plate, with a fairly basic spec.
So I've been increasing looking at alternatives that would be of interest and am really interested in a few facelifted B8 S4 Avants, which can be had for high teens/low twenties for a 13/14 plate car with decent miles and a nice spec.
With the Passat being paid for, an upgrade to an S4, albeit older than the Passat, would come in at around £10k, as opposed to £20k plus for the right 540i.
Would welcome anyone's views on the S4, your experience of owning one and anything to watch out for.
Thanks
Alex

Get one. Ran mine for 8 years with no drama, the engine is a peach.
Did everything I could ever have wanted from a fast estate.
Miss it everyday.

Do it.
Loved mine. Had it 3 years. Then got stolen. Really gutted as I wanted to keep it as a long termer.
Unfortunately didn’t make sense to replace with another so bought something else to replace it with.
ETA
I bought mine from an Audi dealer in 2015 when it was 3 yrs old and with 13k miles. Paid £26k as it was red and didnt have pano roof or B&O hifi.
It was 6 years old (ie 2018) with around 38k miles when it was stolen and I think the Insurance paid just over £20k from memory.
It was a 62 plate facelift car so if a 13 plate car is still around the £20k mark this would suggest they are holding their value very well.
For the price you are looking at i’d rather stretch myself and get a 3-4 year old one from Audi rather than spending 20k on what is an 8-9 year old car.
At least they will give you a warranty that you can extend plus theres may be a deal on 2 years servicing that they sometimes offer. Plus you probably dont have to worry about consumables for a while

On the value side, I did have a look at the B9's, but in truth I prefer the B8 all round and if I was to spend the extra £8/10k, I'd be back to the 5 series tourings I think.
