What next after 5 series touring
Discussion
Current motor is a F11 5 series touring. Space in the back seat (or lack of space) isn’t cutting it anymore with the youngest being pinched behind me (6ft1 and seat almost back to be comfy)
Estate car is needed/preferable to a lwb saloon from next size up.
Petrol preferable to diesel this time given significant cut in mileage due to now being home based post Covid.
Current short list is
- 6 series GT
- merc e class estate (like idea of their version of all road spec)
- Volvo v90 cc
- Skoda superb (280bhp version to even cut it on the list)
Would rather avoid SUV as frequently put plenty of items (bikes, kayaks etc) on the roof)
Appreciate not a new complaint re space in back of an f11 touring but would welcome thoughts, I am finding it still difficult to get into dealers and have a good noise around cars.
So, thoughts & suggestions please ?

I have the older 2015 5GT and my brother the newer 2019 6GT. Both have loads of space in the cabin particularly the 5GT as the back seats move and recline, certainly more than you get in the touring.
The boot is definetly bigger in the 6 over the 5 though.
On papare they both have alot of space in the boot with the seats up but the sloping roof makes it tricky getting bulky items in as you cannot squish things down because of the power tail gate.
We have added a roofbox and bars to ours as we go away as a family of 4 plus 2 small dogs camping alot over the better months and its tight getting everything in that we need to take.

6GT is one of the comfiest cars out there. Excellent rear space as its the same wheelbase as a 7er and the materials are a step above the F11.
Never understood the love for the Superb, yes they are large. I drove one a few hundred miles once, 100% meh. I was even more disappointed as I thought it was an Octavia.
The E is good car, but interior quality is surface deep.

The 5/6 GT are great options & will have the desired legroom

Also if you're considering the Mondeo in Vignale 240 spec it'll have all the legroom you want & is the better steer vs the Superb:

Not really considered Passat estate, will check it out, are their any decent engines in the range ?
I would go down the Ford route but find the interiors a step behind east of market with materials and tech unfortunately. Old shape max with Focus ST engine would have been a great choice if available now

I had a Volvo V90 CC and was always annoyed that Volvo seemed to have made more space for rear passengers at the expense of boot space. So perhaps worth checking out. The lack of an engine with more than 4 cylinders would put me off having another though.
What I’d like now is a 7-series Touring, to be honest; it’s not going to happen but sounds like it’d be ideal for you too. 6GT might be a good wild card; the old 5GT had loads of rear space.
You may end up finding an SUV fits the bill best, sadly.

I swapped out my F11 for a G31. There's a definite increase in size in the cabin - have a look at them before you make up your mind. Some cracking deals to be had as well on nearly new ones that have barely been run in. Estate car is needed/preferable to a lwb saloon from next size up.

I had a 6 series GT as a courtesy car. All of the benefits of an X5 up to and including the b pillar (Possibly my next car) with horrendous headroom and shockingly poor rear visibility.

Yes. Superb does have lots of legroom. And IMO they look quite nice. That's about it though. The boot is very deep but narrow. They quality of the interior is mediocre. A suggestion is to also look at the Passat. More rear legroom than the E Class IME. Some quite good engines to choose from also. 220 and 280 PS petrols And of course cheaper. Quality notably better than Superb but not at E Class standards.
One thing I'd suggest if you are getting new is get acoustic glass.

People confuse quality with plushness. Skoda quality and durability is very good, ‘plushness’ maybe not so.A suggestion is to also look at the Passat. More rear legroom than the E Class IME. In those respects I was underwhelmed by the Skoda. Even if it lasts well.
