Embarrassing car ownership
Discussion
Conversation with my 12 year old daughter yesterday got me thinking….and doesn’t end well. BUT MAY SAVE ME £50k.
I have had about 30 cars over the last 25 years good mixture new / old /quirky from £500-£60k.( some even rented)
Enjoyed owning Morgan’s , Porsche’s , GTI’s, Fast Fords and even a couple of pickup trucks.
I am currently enjoying my cheap Fiesta ST (Pseudo track car) I thought it a little silly to have expensive metal on the driveway when I only drive to take my daughter to school as I WFH.
Daughter piped up saying that ST is embarrassing (Molten Orange) and looks like I trying to be a 20 year old and pretty tragic and we then went onto talk about all the other cars I owned…. And I must admit she was right mostly!, as they are not the typical family school run weapons I had over the years.
Cars such as :
Morgan 3 Wheeler Tragic
Porsche 997 Tragic
Porsche Cayman Tragic
Morgan V6 Tragic
Ford Ranger Cool
Mini Cooper diesel cool?
Corrado VR6 Storm Tragic
GT86 Tragic
L200 cool
Fortunately Tesla’s very uncool
(For balance my wife always has a Golfs)
Anyway this went on for a while and the takeaway is I do buy cars that I think I will enjoy but after a while something can happen and then we get buyers remorse… rinse repeat…all good.
We then went onto talk about friends parents cars and what her and her friends perceptions are typical private school car park full of Tesla’s/Range Rovers, X3/5/6 get the picture then the other end (old money) 20 year old Volvos/ Defenders etc..
She mentioned the one she like the most in the car park and who owns it….i was astounded (I happen to know they are old money and do actually like in a castle). Dacia Duster in white.
That’s it the Macan GTS I was looking at ordering may now be a Dacia Duster as thats cool and the Macan isn’t and who doesn’t want to be a cool dad.
Dacia is the new cool in the school car park..is she winding me up??

Can I direct the OP to (old) Top Gear's Cool Wall, feature which explained why supercars and sportscars are often deeply uncool, because they are so often associated with middle aged or slightly elderly men going through some form of existential crisis.
Personally its been years since I last cared whether people though I was cool or not so it has never really been a deciding factor in what sort of car I choose to buy. A B road weapon like an ST or those new Yarises (Yari?) sounds like fun to me.

OP. I think it is time for a TVR. In purple. And loud. If you are going tragic, go full TRAGIC!
I'm offended. I think I'd be the coolest father in the car park.
OP - you need to find a really grim state school to send your kid school. Then it'd be easier to stand out with your expensive cars.
