The ST has gone back to the finance company much to my disappointment and has been replaced with an S-Max. Loving the extra space however the difference in performance is quite sobering. Enjoying not being in the petrol station all the time tho!
So now I need a second car for station duties. Will also need to be capable of doing the odd round trip of 150 odd miles to pick my kids up. Other stipulations are, 5 doors, manual, less than 100k miles, preferably low tax, ideally not a tiny engine and upwards of £4-4.5k. So far, top of the list is a tidy Kia Rio 1.4 diesel. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks

I'd go with a VW up, small enough for the station, good on fuel for both short trips and on a run. Big enough for 4, they don't go wrong unlike the remainder of the VW range.

Its all you need (or there is the citygo or mii)

Kia Rio is a workhorse, will do the job, but isn't at all exciting.
I'd try the petrol version in preference to the diesel.
But the suspension on both is awful.
Maybe a Cee'd?

Suzuki Swift is another option.

Personally can't stand the Up.

Small turbo engined cars are not too bad, the turbo gives them a bit of extra torque so they are not totally gutless, won't feel as fast as your ST, mind!

Something like a 2014 Suzuki Swift 1.2 is a good option. Hardly any tax, economical but also pretty nippy if you rev high, and handles like a go-kart! I got my wife one over 4 years ago and other than servicing I've only had to replace the battery. Still on the same pads, tyres etc. Nothing seems to go wrong with it.
