Hey all,

So bit of a back story, I've previously owned an RS3 PFL and afterwards had W205 C63 Coupe which I sold tail end of March this year.

Ever since been without a car as I didn't really need it due to working from home. But, lately been feeling like I want bit of freedom back as I live in village and can't get anywhere without a car. Unless I use train or bus.

So, the question that I'm constantly asking myself is. Do I get a fun car again (which probably be expensive) or do I just get normal daily driver and wait for the market to calm down a bit, as there is currently premium on everything. (Don't mind waiting)

I've been thinking possibly get something really cheap, like E90 3 series with 3 liter diesel. Ever since I sold my car I've been driving my sisters c220d and dad's Volvo, so got used to boring cars per say.

What do you guys think? Get a cheap car and wait for market to calm down (which will also give me time to save more money)?

Cheers

Market won't calm down. Most think higher prices are here to stay as UK used cars have been too cheap ££ for too long.

The market sets the price and they could well get even more expensive as those who sold out in April have found out to their cost.

I was at the point of buying an M4 to replace my M135i, had the cash pretty much saved and was ready to go, then wondered why I was saving, doing without other stuff to put a car on the path I wouldn't drive that much.

As luck would have it, my son changed his car and I bought his old one, a Fiesta ST so he could buy the new one on the proviso I sell it, sold the BMW instead as the Ford is much more fun for the limited mileage I do. I spent quite a bit on tuning so it stands me at over 12 grand now, but that's still about a third of what I would have spent getting an M4.

So I would advocate something like that, if you can cope with a non premium badge, maybe a Mini Cooper S if you like a bit less Fordiness, then maybe do a few bits an pieces ?

If you just need something to get out and about in the short term get a shed for sub 1k and use that to get around in. Prices are higher than normal at the moment, but depends on what car you want to get next and will it make a difference if you buy now or in 12months time?

Some years ago I had a new Cayman GTS as a daily, 20-30 miles per day mainly back roads happy days.... Then I changed jobs and ended up with a 100 mile commute each day, mainly motorway, miles started to rack up and it was no fun on the commute sat in traffic etc etc.

I decided to lease a Ecoboost Fiesta to do the long boring commute, the car was a revelation I loved how it was trying to punch above it's weight, peaky engine that you had the push, it handled well enough and returned around 50mpg, plus I could park it anywhere without the risk of some scrote keying it etc.

The upshot was the GTS didn't get used barely for the 2 years I leased the Fiesta for and really messed my head up, part of me wanted the brand and the driving experience, but part of me questioned do I need a car that's 50K more than a Fiesta for pretty much 95% of my driving.

I think you'll be fine in a boring car based upon my experience.

What J4CKO said. A car doesn't have to be expensive or 'premium' to be fun, in the same way that being expensive doesn't automatically make something not boring!

I went from a 204 C63 and an Aston Vantage to a Nissan Leaf and still found fun in the driving. I've gone several times from high performance to sheds and not felt too sad about it. I've actually found that the contrast made me enjoy the next "special" car all the more.

Why not get a cheap fun car? Up GTI, Swift Sport, Fiesta ST, something like that...

That's one of my main concerns that the market is there to stay, kind of makes me regret not holding onto the c63 for a bit longer 😅 and selling it when market shot up.

To be fair, the badge doesn't mean anything to me if the car feels special enough or shall I say fun enough. My main concern about the smaller fun cars is that I need 4 doors and decent boot space now.

From what I've seen, before the prices went through the roof you could get, let's say a car with 18k miles for X amount and now for same amount you looking at car with 45k miles on it. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards getting cheap daily and seeing what market does.

I've looked into getting a cheaper fun car, my only concern is the space. As its something that I need now, which is the reason I ruled out the smaller hot hatches.

The 330d to mention should be all the car you need for road use. Fast enough, comfortable enough and fun enough.

The 330d is a pretty decent car

You need never spend more than £10k to own a car that ticks the fun, special, practical boxes. In fact £5k can still buy a lot of desirable metal.

What do you need is a comfort level with owning older cars and the nous to buy well.

A couple of points

1). New cars have approx 1000 pieces of silicon in them. Current estimate reckons the current chip supply issue may still be with us for another two years. Quite often one chip will mean production lines stopped. So I seriously reckon second hand prices are only going to go one way as older cars get scrapped at the bottom end and limited supply at the top end. (I work in the electronics industry).

2) I have an E92 330i. The 3 series is too competent to be fun on the roads. If you enjoy straight line acceleration, by all means try one. Note, I would probably find a C63 quite boring to drive too.....once I had got used to the acceleration.

If you want a car rather than need one then it definitely has to be fun. Besides, motoring is becoming more expensive and more restrictive so enjoy it while you still can.

A fast, forced induction petrol estate sounds just the ticket for you.

hardly matters what it is. Just buy something half decent for 1 or 2k, and drive it around. If it's OK keep it, and if you don't like it, sell it. It's a car, who cares?
