£20k tops ideally, sub 30k miles, Euro 6 compliant, toys/ nice place to be, ie top or not far from top spec seems to lead to:
Mitsubishi L200, leaf spring rear, covered in chromed plastic.
Fiat Fullback,a rebadged L200, generally seems to cheaper interiors though, well, basic anyway.
Ssangyong Musso, bit odd looking.
Isuzu D Max, apparently the most reliable, also a bit odd looking.
Navara, 2.3D, apparently big update in 2019 made them a lot better, but they’re too expensive and I’m not sure what needed improving.
Hilux is billy basic at this money, so seems out.
Ranger, although very hard to find at this budget.
Which is best? Or is it a case of “least worst” given the brief?

Two farmer mates have had Rangers and both have blown up, even though they had been serviced at the correct schedule.
I can't remember which engine they had, but I'm pretty certain they didn't have the 3.2.
I don't know enough about the Rangers (apart from they're everywhere), but I know I'd avoid them especially outside of warranty.
My money would always go to a Hilux Invincible edition, or failing that, VW Amarok V6. I never hear anything bad about these two pickups

Depending on how long you intend to own it, get the thing properly rustproofed, quite a few crewcabs are suffering from quite severe root and literally snapping in half, and not just Navaras either.
They are all a much of a muchness really, none are substantially better than the others, although you'll pay a premium for the perceived quality of the VW and the badge on the Toyoda.

Correct and the L200 and the Amarok are the only 2 that can be driven in 4WD on Tarmac.
I did 30k in my 2016 L200, and with a canopy on the rear it rode fairly comfortably.
There was very little, 'plastic' chrome, and it was far better to drive than you'd imagine.
Difference between Warrior and Barbarian was exterior chrome bits, some blue interior lights and different seats. Apart from that equipment was identical.

I'd look for the best 3.2 Ranger I could find:

Or the D Max in Yukon spec:

Appreciate the replies!
Ranger certainly splits the crowd, it seems they're either ace or blow up, with no inbetween.
Navara decisive too, although the chassis split seems to be quite old news now, so I'm unfazed. They're cheap, but still Nissan plastic inside, which is not great.
The L200 is getting much more favourable reviews a than I thought it might, and I was blind to the road limits it has too as I thought they were heavy enough to be outside dual use. There are plenty about, despite Mitsubishi pulling out of the UK, so it seems I will need to find one and a Navara and see if I can cope with the Pulsar switchgear!

Bought a Navara in March very very pleased with it £23k ish new plus vat but i think there is a bit of a wait right now.
I've got a 2021 Hilux Invincible X, I can't fault it but on the same token I've never sampled any of the others. I'm fairly confident in saying that I think it was near £40K, well the list price is, I didn't pay for it - it's a company vehicle. As for the Ford Rangers, they haven't for a very good reputation by my reckoning. They aren't the most reliable and have inherent problems. Plus if they have the Ford 2.0 diesel, they are plagued by timing belt and injector problems.
My Ranger Wildtrak auto is 3 years old and circa 70k miles.
Previously had Isuzus x 2.
The Ford is leagues ahead of almost all of the competition barring the VW but the VW is hellish expensive.
I have not had a single problem over those very hard miles which have involved full load towing, 4H and 4L driving and general 9/10ths everywhere hooning.
I've just ordered another new one, albeit the new smaller capacity auto. I'm hoping it is as good as Bertha.
Beware, 2nd hand prices are very strong. I've been offered £23.5k part ex. Given that I only paid £28.9k plus VAT and the truck is paid for I'm very pleased!

It depends what you want your pickup for. Lots of pickup owners buy them as work vehicles, use them for a few years then get rid. The general consensus amongst people I know in the trade is that rust protection and the strength of the chassis on quite a few different Japanese pickups and 4x4s is suspect. My mate who used to work for a well known Welsh specialist in off road vehicles has also told me this, which is a shame as I quite fancy buying one. Obviously you are buying a newish one so it shouldn't be rusty yet so you'll have time to get it waxoiled and it may well be that'll you'll trade it in long before any other expensive problems surface.Ranger certainly splits the crowd, it seems they're either ace or blow up, with no inbetween.

L200s are far and away the most common pickups where I live, (perhaps there is a dealer nearby) and they seem to last quite well, with quite a few of the old old shape still on the road. New Navaras are common, but most of the old ones have now vanished, ditto Hiluxes.
