Jaguar XE - wise buy?
Discussion
Looking replace my current car when it fails its annual test - body is not in great condition.
I like the look of the Jaguar XE as a replacement, probably with the diesel engine, but not fully decided. However, I've been reading up on them and it seems that their Ingenium engines are not all that great. Is this really the case or is it just the noisy minority who been unlucky or didn't service them correctly?
What would be a decent alternative - I was hoping to avoid Audi & BMW. Looking for a mid sized comfortable wagon for mainly motorway driving.
I should state my budget is up to £9k - hence why I was looking at 2015/2016 XE's.
Thanks.

Horror stories aren't isolated events and I wouldn't own one outside of having a Jag warranty of some kind or other. We had 2017 one for two years from new and it was OK but nothing special and actually quite small. Replaced with a 2015 Mondeo and wouldn't go back. JLR reliability not great in recent years.
I have not owned one but I had a ride in a mates XE a while back. To be honest, I was very disappointed.Sure, it had that luxury look and feel but it felt surprisingly cramped (both front passenger and back seats) and uncomfortable compared to my knackered old 320d estate. It was not helped by the conversation between the owner and a fellow passenger (who also owned an XE) about all the quirks (read:things not working properly or stupidly designed) that they had in common. Before that I was considering an XE, not anymore. (plus I have other priorities for a car right now)
I cannot remember what age the car was though.

I have to say the XE's aren't a bad car they ride well they had issues early on with the Ingenium engines but it seems to be less of an issue now & I'd say they are no less reliable than their German counterparts but one thing they are a bit short on is space.I like the look of the Jaguar XE as a replacement, probably with the diesel engine, but not fully decided. The alternative option is an Infiniti Q50 2.1d in either Premium spec. which will get you a better built nicely loaded car with low mileage:

Or a top spec Sport model with a few more miles both have the same drivetrain as a C220d so reliability isn't an issue

They're also ULEZ & CAZ compliant.
Another nice alternate is the DS5 they have a nice well appointed interior with a nice drivetrain with good NVH levels:
D Sport 180

I'd normally recommend the Mondeo as it's a very good car but at your price point the better built Infiniti get's the nod.

That is what I've been hearing/reading too.
Disappointing as a small saloon is what I want and I really like the look of it. I presume the quirks/issues were not corrected in the facelift model?
What do you mean by quirks? The space hasn't been addressed the infotainment was a clear step forward but it still drives well no matter what model you pick.Disappointing as a small saloon is what I want and I really like the look of it. The S60 D4 is a nice compact saloon but in reality no more spacious than the XE.
You won't find a facelift model for less than £25k. My brother had one for 3 months before it got written off, interior is a lot better than the pre-facelift in terms of quality and the infotainment is a lot better. However, the fit and finish and quality of the 3 series that replaced it is miles better. The Jag is better to drive than the BMW and a lot more exclusive if that's something you care about.
For your budget I'd say just go for a 3 series of a Lexus IS hybrid if you can live with the CVT gearbox.

A lot more exclusive?! I see loads of XEs about. I wouldn't describe either as exclusive. For your budget I'd say just go for a 3 series of a Lexus IS hybrid if you can live with the CVT gearbox.
Been driving an XE for nearly 2 years now. Absolutely fantastic car and I cannot recommend it enough.
The issues encountered are all in the diesels - the fuel of satan, so naturally if you go for diesel, hell will follow.
However if you go for the saintly petrols, all will be good.
I would recommend for balance, put the gearbox in sport, the drive mode in normal, and then leave it alone - easily the best compact saloon out there and in my opinion a much better balance than the 3 series or A4.
The R-sport has a ~240bhp (177kW) motor and has enough poke to keep it fun and interesting, without being overbearing or damaging on the wallet for fuel costs.
There is also the option of the supercharged V6; I haven't driven it so can't comment.
However - at £9k I think budget is going to push you into a nasty, high mileage diesel in all likelihood. By way of comparison, the example I'm in cost ~£18k being recently 2nd hand and with 19k miles on the clock. I think that a £9k budget is going to leave you with some ratty poverty spec pickings.
I would think based on my prior research that a 3 series or Skoda Superb/Octavia might be a better buy in that budget.

My uncle had a diesel - AUC and owned for two years but he just chopped it in after repetitive successive issues. Engine management light turning on every few weeks needing expensive diagnostics: “it may be £800 to sort sir” etc. I think it was just out of warranty too.
Dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree so I was told. From reading the above I never realised it was so common.

Would the high mile Lexus be coming close to engine issues? This one has 135k on it. I've always driven a diesel.

It'll be the suspension components I'd be more concerned because a refresh of those isn't cheap, again I'd be going for a Q50 with half the miles:https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105263...

I'd be purchasing from Northern Ireland by getting RAC to do a check on my behalf - can they be relied upon or are they known to 'work with' the dealers?
Secondly, I'd not be needing the warranty as it would be useless to me over here - how much could I get taken off the price for a sale with no warranty - or are they allowed to sidestep that?
Are auto boxes the way to go - never had one before, its all been manuals here.

Your warranty is still valid in NI, as for how much to take off personally I'd advise buying a car with a warranty.
The RAC are a decent service so I'd use them, Auto boxes are fine just make sure they've had the fluid & filters changed on time if it hasn't been done get £300 taken off the price.
