"Cool/different"
-these days, Mondeo.
£5K doesn't get you as much as it did pre-pandemic. In the same situation I bought a 2012 Mondeo Estate Titanium X with Windsor pleather & SatNav/reversing camera options. It has an excellent stereo along with bluetooth and USB inputs. It's an excellent car. I am considering it a "holding car" for a couple of years until I treat myself to the F11 530D ZF8 that I really wanted but couldn't really justify the extra outlay.-these days, Mondeo.
For the same money you are looking at leggy E61 530Ds or W211 320CDIs that are approaching 15yrs old and bring more complexity, ageing air suspension etc.
The Legacy/Outback 3.0 is a good suggestion, but post March 2006 will be high tax (£600/yr) and they are very thirsty.
Appreciate you want something "interesting" but right now £5k isn't buying much that isn't getting pretty old.
All IMHO of course.

Never even thought of a subaru! That's a good shout ill have alook.
I've had a couple of classics before so old doesn't bother me too much.
Even looked at old range rovers. My commute is under 3 miles so fuel economy isn't a problem
Be worth looking at the H6 3.0 but also the JDM import 2.0 twinscroll, it's faster than the H6 and being imported only likely to be better condition than similar age h6, tax is cheaper though they do cost more to buy I've had a couple of classics before so old doesn't bother me too much.

Your vanity and budget are at opposites, unless you are handy with the spanners. Toyota Avensis?
That's abit of a personal dig which I disagree with, but your suggestion is fair and I will look abit more into them as they look like good value and not a Ford.Yes I'm handy with spanners but I'm not after a project. A bit of tender love and care and I think most old cars will tick along happily if they aren't messed with.

You'd need to find one where you are the 2nd UK owner btw to stay within budget, the premium of fresh imports would take these over £5kRoboticarm said:

Thanks for that, I could stretch the 5k if it was worth it. I'll have alook at them.A circa 2004 audi so is a contender and thats abit over 5k now

Have a quick look at the £6k thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... - some potentially useful suggesitons in there.
Given you have a 3 mile commute to work, then £4.5 k on the car and £500 on a pushbike with some lights for the winter.
Or you could go further still and enter the shed thread....

The other one id buy if not the subaru is a saab 95 aero. Always wanted one, stage 1 and just have fun cheap fast motoring.
Couldn't agree more - exactly what I did late last year and loving the Aero wagon still. Does what I need, and well, plus means the bank balance for a new toy grows ready for next year when I'll get something to run alongside it, and my Puma projectGassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
