The next logical step from a 440i GC seemed to be a M4.
I am having some doubts.
This morning I felt very confident about the car and my mind was made up. I placed a £1000 deposit. Did not sign a vehicle order form. The used car sales manager is away for the weekend and back in next Wednesday.

The franchise dealer is over 600 miles away.
Of course, I feel bad about this but when I think, how much would I use the M4? May be once every 2-3 weeks. So what’s the point.

You may proceed to heckle me.

Just tell them you've changed your mind and ask for the deposit back, it's not even worth posting about...

Found a lot of conflicting information online. On how you have to fight for your deposit back etc. Will call them first thing tomorrow.

There are so few cars out there at the moment, I’m sure they will shrug and just re sell it in a week.

I’d check their website etc for any published terms and conditions. If they haven’t explicitly shared them with you, then you can’t be expected to abide by them frankly.

Assuming you haven't set foot on the premises, and assuming it's as simple a story as you say, then the law allows you to change your mind and get your money back, in full.
I had exactly this with a very well known Porsche specialist, who said "no Sir, we won't refund you, we will keep your deposit in reserve for when you do eventually buy a car from us". I had to get a little bit shirty with them and quote the law, at which point they refunded my deposit in full, without delay.
Irritating for the dealer, but they know, or should know, the distance selling rules in the first place.

Alternative perspective:
I'd be more inclined to buy something special like an M4 if I were going to use it infrequently.

At least you didn't have it delivered and drive it about for 14 days and then change your mind.

Distance selling laws are ridiculous - fine for a Mars bar or a shirt but not for a vehicle with possibly £500 delivery fees

i love how so many phers buy cars as far away as they can then complain, when inevitability something goes wrong and they have to pay for return etc. FFS just buy one locally not exactly rare and you can talk and build up a relationship with them.

This. They're very unlikely to fight you, very unlikely to give you any grief.

Yes, I wish autotrader and all the other sites would put a minimum distance filter on, instead of maximum, so I can filter out all the otherwise perfectly suitable cars which are less than 200 miles away.

That's really bad for a Porsche specialist!
Op you will have no problem being refunded.

I have to say using something special like an M4 every 2-3 weeks actually makes a lot of sense especially when it comes to enjoying the car & value a t resale time.

As others have said getting your deposit back won't be an issue just give them a call.
